When my wife and I went to south africa we rented a ute. When we went to Australia I found a Nissan patrol for sale and made and offer to rent it for our trip. I hope this helps.

I've driven from the US to our neighboring nations. We've shipped vehicles to various countries and I've done the fly and drive option. For example this last week we flew to Peru, rented a Toyota Fortuner at the airport and chased the Dakar Race across across the sand dunes, etc. There is no right answer, just go.
