2 meter. Do a local internet search for HAM clubs in your area. They will test you. Memorize the test answers at back of book. Test is directly from them.

HF would be more for a hobby, however depending on where in Canada you may be travelling it may be a good tool to have.

I have a Yaesu FTM 100, 400, 70 for my digital needs. I also have a Yaesu 8800 and a couple of Boaefangs that I lend out to friends to listen in on if they are not licensed. I think I will be getting another FTM 400 as they are currently on sale for $395..... that is $170 off normal pricing.

If your still in the YYC, you have 4 examiners in your city that you can write your test through. But if your an ex LCIS, or SIG OP, you might not have too much trouble with it.

Thats the link to the exam generator and questions. Standard government test format. Multiple choice, two wrong answers, 1 that could be right, and 1 that is right. There's also practice exams in there as well. All you need for VHF UHF is a basic qualification. But if you score high enough you will get "basic with honors" and be permitted to use HF radios.

That link will let you search for an examiner in your area. You dont need to fill all the fields in, just the 403 area code, and your province should bring them up.

If not HF, then maybe try to set something up on EchoLink for those of us that aren’t licensed for it or don’t have the equipment....yet. Heck, EL can be used on an iPhone. I know, I know. Not actually radio, but maybe an option for the times you can’t get to the radio. Just thinking out loud.
