I do the same exact thing. Always works, and it’s free and easy.
I love to play with bushcraft, but when counting on starting a fire and so often dealing with less-than-ideal conditions, I use a propane torch. It's handy for a variety of other tasks as well. The torch I carry self-ignites at the push of a button and can be locked in the open position. I've had this one for about 10 years. They run about $38 on Amazon.

I like the idea of some hand sanitizer...I already have it with me anyway. The more damp and nasty, the more flammable combinations come into play. AND IT'S CHEAP.

We also do petroleum jelly and cotton. My wife puts petroleum jelly on a make-up remover pad(cotton rounds) and folds it in half and then dips it into wax. Work great and we have a bunch stashed with our different camping gear.
