Hi all. I am building an overland camper from a 1968 M416 military trailer, and I wanted to see what ideas you all have for the roof and side skins.

This trailer has 40-inch tires and I am building it to be pulled behind my 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser, which is also on 40-inch tires and it is set up for 9/10 rock-crawling trails. Since it needs to be extremely tough for the abuse that it will see, I have opted to go with a steel frame above the bed. This frame holds up the rooftop tent, and I want to cover it with something lightweight without having to build additional support into the frame.

I initially thought about using camper siding, but I quickly realized that I would need something solid behind it to attach the siding to. Otherwise, I am concerned that it would just flap in the wind while driving down the highway. I am thinking about going with 14-gauge sheet metal, which would add about 125 pounds, but I wanted to see what you all thought.

I am sure that I will have more questions along the way, as I have never built a camper before and really have no idea what I am doing. Any advice that you have would be greatly appreciated.

If you would like to check out the first build video that I created, feel free. I have a very small YouTube channel that I started a long time ago as a place to store VHS videos. Over the past couple of years, I have regained interest in posting videos, so I started sharing more of my projects. It has now become a place to document some of my progress. The videos are very amateur, but I hope you enjoy following along.

Thanks in advance!
Mike

Love the stretched FJ on long arms and coil over shocks. Did you do the work yourself?

I did something similar to my 47 Jeep CJ2a I’ve been working on for 35+ years, 25” frame stretch to get to 103” wheelbase and made it into a little truck with custom cab and bed. I’m over 6’ so don’t fit in the little CJs, and the frame stretch gave me more room with the new truck cab. On this build, I decided to use coil springs instead of coil overs, only because it’s cheaper and I didn’t have to dial in the spring rates on coil overs. V6, granny 4 speed, PS, PB, etc. Not much drivetrain left from the original Jeep.

Next upgrade this winter is full floating rear Dana 44 and Dana 30 up front (current is the original Dana 25), both with e-lockers and chromoly shafts. I had to winch twice on the Rubicon in June 2026, so the lockers should keep that from happening in 2027, and better axle shafts will keep me from having to carry 4 spare axles.

Holy Cross is on my bucket list…

Hi there! That is a cool Jeep. I had a 46 and a 48 a long time ago and they were really fun trucks.

I did build my Cruiser and I have had it for over 30 years. I have a build thread on Ih8mud.com and I will provide a link below. It is also stretched, and I stretched it 14” with a 109” wheelbase. It has been a lot of fun!

We are planning a trip to the Rubicon next September and I am hoping to drag the camper along with me.
