DIY Faucet in a 5 Gallon Water Can

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but this is a project I’m currently working on after being inspired by this video.

I’m running in to a problem with the Fastronix grommet though. There just isn’t enough threads on the grommet to get past all the plastic in the lid. Has anyone gotten past this? How did @Michael get that grommet secured to the lid?

Thanks all for the help!

Did you shave down the hole where the grommet would go so that the gromment screws on flush against the underside? I ended up not using the gromment because I had bought the wrong size. I just put silicone around the hole I made.

Not entirely sure what you mean by shaving down the hole? I’ve just drilled so far, not sure how I’d shave it to get it to fit? Do you know how?

Was your grommet too large, or too small?

Thanks for the response btw!

Oh sorry for the other hole for the gromment. I believe the gromment comes in two pieces? I'm assuming the screw part goes underneath the cap? I'll have to dig mine up. The one I had bought was too large, even though I bought the one that linked me from the YouTube video to Amazon. I guess I should have checked the size, but it's hard to tell since I never bought a gromment before.

Yeah, grommet is in 3 pieces. The main “shaft” of the grommet (the bulkhead part of it, not sure what it’s called) and 2 nuts. One to attach it to whatever it is you’re going through, and the other is to compress the sleeve around your wires.

The attaching part of it is way too short to get through the plastic. The other part is longer, but is still rather short. It boggles my mind how this was done in the video. Studying the video, it looks like he was able to grab a couple threads at least mounting it!

I have a 7, a 9, an 11, and a 13.5 for grommet sizes so surely one of these should work?

Hopefully these video screen shots help?

Thanks for those screen shots! I think I might have stumbled across the solution. In looking up the grommets, they have what are called thread lengthening cable glands which are these same grommets, but about double the number (length) of mountable threads. I just picked up a pack of PG9s so I’ll report back in once I get them.

Alright, awesome! Good luck with those!

As an FYI to anyone doing this project, these are both PG9 cable glands (Fastronix-style) connectors. They have very different mounting sizes. I had to specifically get “thread-lengthening” cable glands to get through the thick plastic.

...or you could just save the trouble and silicon around the wires...

Kind obvious once you compare the two cable glands side by side huh ? Why didn't you just contact Mike and ask him ? I think he said he had a distinctive list under his youtube video.

I joined the forum as an attempt to gain info and attempt to contact him (as I believe this was the means requested, I thought I had read somewhere) . The list provided in the video did have a link to Fastronix connectors but there was a lot of question about proper sizing. The ones I originally purchased (not true Fastronix) ended up not working due to overall length, so I figured I’d leave something for other folks who may be interested.

Good hit Tim, I would not have known there was more than one length size either until you brought it up. I went with a (Amazon) 4 gallon hand pump back sprayer (with converted sprayer end ) that I attach to my fish bait cutting table with a cleaning sink (Amazon). It is also my shower water supply or any other water needed for camping. Painted black and left in the sun provides hot water for washing dishes or taking a bath (mine is not painted and still provides warm water) I also carry 2 extra 5 gallon blue plastic water cans (Walmart) with a household exterior hose bib (ACE hardware) fitted to the original male spout location that broke off the first years of use. The new ones are brass and will never break. On those tanks if they are laid on their side in camp they provide water for drinking just like a kitchen sink at home. I store them upright while traveling.
