China from India or Nepal

Fantastic...you made it. I definitely had my doubts but low and behold perseverance paid off. Well done!

I'd like to think that this opens the door for others to experience the amazing journey you have just taken...even though it's just one chapter in your epic adventure!

Hi Pete

Yes....well received and I am assuming you are referring to what you sent on page 1 of this thread. Although I would've loved to see some pics of your journey from Lhasa...across Tibet and into Yunnan Province ;-)

We're a week away from heading out towards Shanghai...then north as we do a big counterclockwise/6 month tour. Thinking of documenting the trip here as I do not have any other "western" social media.

Hope your adventure into Laos and beyond has gone without any drama. Careful of the red ants and cobras. Laundry soap around the tires and ladder feet works the best!

Cheers

WOW!!!

How awesome was that...you guys are definitely on a very short list of western overlanders who have crossed Tibet.

Great pictures...many thanks for sharing. Some I recognize...and you both look pretty darn happy. Your town square pic in Shangri-la gets me itchin' to start sleeping under the stars again and get back there!

You’re welcome and thank you so much for your help and guidance

Interesting to know we are one of a handful of Westerners to travel through. I hadn’t realised that

Would you have a stat at all of how many westerners may have preceded us?

I would reckon Google or Youtube searches will come up practically empty. Your Tibetan guide would be the one to ask. And now that your trip (through China) is done and dusted, I wouldn't be surprised he'd say you're the first westener he's heard of that has done a self driving tour from Nepal to Laos around Myanmar. I certainly haven't heard of anyone.

So good on you...and your co-pilot!!!

Thank you, for sharing! I've read that the guides travel with you, but bring their own sleeping bag and sleep off by themselves...is this true? What a great accomplishment!

Tibetans are a very hardy bunch...creature comforts consist of a wind break and a good pile of yak dung to fuel their stoves. Some live in tents all year round tending their herds while others live in homes pass down from generations. An amazing culture in so many ways.

Pete's assessment was really good...especially the passing on blind corners part...haha

Hi. Our guide slept in the hotel we stayed at. The hotels were allegedly 3*, but we found all of them were 4-5 star. Just absoltely lovely and the prices incredibly reasonable. Yesthe Tibetans are hardy. What they carry on their backs (up to 60kg) is staggering. And they can go the whole day doing that.

Thank you for your kind words - it feels like a great accomplishment and apparently we are one of the 1st westerners to traverse Tibet, through China and down into Asia.

I had a really similar experience when I was planning a trip into China definitely not the easiest border to navigate on your own. I ended up booking a guide through https://gowithguide.com/ and it made a huge difference. They helped sort out the permits and logistics, having a local guide who knows the process is a game changer. Definitely recommend looking into it if you’re still figuring things out!

Thanks for reaching out. I would suggest everyone takes a guide to cut down on the hassles in China. Our guide came from
https://tibetroofofworld.com Just an amazing 14 day tour from Nepal through to Laos.
