They do it that way all over Australia!

if you have a swr meter, you will be ok. Just make sure you get good readings on it. Also check how flexible it is. If its a flexible whip it should be ok under tree limbs and such, if not you might want to get a spring for the bottom and maybe a tie-down rope.

It looks good there old mate. I just read the thread today but I was going to suggest a bonnet mount. I know that GME Australia make them and you can get the universal model that will fit most rigs.

You'll want to add a 1/2" braided copper strap from each mount of the bar to the frame or body with the paint removed under each end to electrically "tie" that brush guard to the body. Remember, just because you have DC continuity doesn't mean you have a good RF continuity. That will improve the performance. You also don't want something like your fog lights trying to use your coax braid as a ground instead of flowing back into the body like it should. That's bad news for your radio. That's one reason many radios have a fuse in both the + and - power leads. You can paint back over the connections once they are made to seal them and prevent rust. Also, having the upper part of the bar close to the antenna will affect SWR quite a bit and who knows what it's doing to your radiation pattern.

Thank you for the advice I will surely do that

These should work good for you! You could even just get one and cut it in half and re-terminate it if you don't have a supply of braid.

They work good to tie things like swing out tire carriers with antenna mounts back to the bumper and the bumper into the frame as well as things like rear hatches on SUVs to the body.
