This is an easier run for those with well equipped rigs and more wheeling/crawling experience and a good beginner route. Bamfield is an amazing piece of Vancouver Island that is quite remote. Coming from the USA or the mainland, you need to ferry in to either Nanaimo or Victoria. Access overland to Bamfield is via an established logging road, the condition of which can really depend on the time of year. Winter can see major flooding and washout of the gravel road. A good overlanding rig should be fine. Definitely make sure to bring spare tire, extra gas and chains in winter. Bamfield has some extremely untouched beaches and forest for hiking. Its also the northern entrance of the famous West coast trail. The road has many offshoots and no cell reception so a backwoods mapbook and or GPS is always a good idea though the main route is well marked. Lots of offshoot trails for people wanting to hit the rough too.

From Victoria, British Columbia
  • North on Hwy #1.
  • Take the exit to Lake Cowichan, which is north of Duncan.
  • Past Lake Cowichan, enter a network of gravel roads (~120 km).
  • Roads are marked, and should be no trouble. Follow the power lines.
  • Make sure you have a spare tire and lots of gas.
Travel time: 4 hours.
