  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

Planning a family trip to Baja and just wondering everyones thought on doing it with our 99 F250 Super Duty.

Truck has an auto trans, Detroit relocker and 6" lift.

My concern is it weighs in at 8,900lbs when loaded for camping - not counting people.

Any thoughts?

I drove lots of miles with small 2 wheel drive stock truck, you'll do fine. I wouldn't be going across sand dunes or cobel beaches. I am not sure where you are headed but you should be fine. I spend a lot of time there and would love to help you if you want. Shoot me a message if you want

Thanks Mike. So far Vehicles going are a 2005 F150 4x4, 2008 Tacoma 4x4 - 4 cylinder, 81 2wd VW vanagon and our 2wd F250. Some family from Montana may be coming down so we will be needing to rent another vehicle for them.

Will post more when I know.

All depends where you go.

Don't go where 4wd is needed and you won't need 4wd.

Fairly simple concept.

You are concerned that it weighs 8900 lbs. Is that overloaded? If not what is the concern?

I think he was wondering if a heavy truck will get him in trouble. Rolling over sand or a rocky beach in fine in a Taco or something light, doing the same in a loaded 3/4 ton truck might be different. Driving in moondust in a heavy truck can suck. I have been driving down roads in Baja all happy and good, turn a corner and have conditions change for the worst. A nice road becomes a sand trap for a big truck. I drive a 3/4 ton Ram long bed, I know. Better to ask now than spend a day digging out or building a stone road.

Stick to hard dround and you should have no problems. I started driving in the 1970s. No one had 4 wheel drive back then. A station wagon was the SUV.

My first car was a 57 Chevy 4 door 210 wagon - I paid $500.00 and it was in perfect condition! It was in 1968.
