any DIY ideas for an awning?

This is an old pic, but here's one I built out of some Rubbermaid adjustable poles, and a small tarp from Wally World. Add a few carabiner clips, some para-cord, tent stakes, and tada.

I use this. $100 bucks and it works great. Nicely built. You can go off the sides or back.

Yeah man, I second this. I have one and though have not used it much other than to open it and check for quality and strength, you can't beat it for versatility, value, and ease of use/set-up. Even though I have attached awnings, I see this getting used a lot both on and off my van and trailer.
