The wife and I picked up a three owner Florida owned Monty/Pajero as our basis for our Overlander build. As you may know, Mitsubishi won the Paris to Dakar Rally a record 12 times with the Montero/Pajero so its a pretty good off roader to begin with. We are starting with the maintenance of the vehicle. Cooling system refresh, timing belt, tensioner, all fluids changed, fuel filter, brake rotors and pads, ect. Lift is supplied by OME and shocks are KYB Gas-A-Justs with the optional dust boots and new mounts/bearings as well. Then, skid plates are in route and the rock sliders are ordered but 4 weeks out... Wheels and tires are here and have been mounted and balanced but not the the truck yet. We went with a Vision Overlander II wheel in 16x8 with zero offset. Tires are Federal Couragia MTs in 265/76-16. ARB Deluxe bumper, 10K winch, and Hella bumper lights will be installed this Friday at 4Wheel Parts down in Orlando. Future goodies will include a roof rack to hold the recovery items and a 7x7 Rhino awning. Here are a few pics thus far:

Awesome montero build! I'm running a 97 gen 2 myself. Honestly one of the most underrated 4x4 on the market. Makes it hard to find support in the US for sure. Looking forward to how this build turns out.

Joe,
100% correct. So much bang for the buck with the Monty. I like the fact that I have the 3.5 with the manual locking center diff and not the electronic type system. The wife and I are excited. Sometimes I think she is more excited then me. LOL

I’ve had several sets of Federal Couragia MTs and I liked them good tires as long as you keep them rotated. Lol

Got the rig back and took it for the wheel and tire install then alignment. She was really in need of an alignment. Here are some photos and I included what I think is the original spare tire unused. The first photo you will see the rear tires in severe positive camber from the lift. Quite funny. All good now. Going for the ARB bumper and wince install tomorrow. I’ll post more pics. Cheers.

Very nice. I had 2 Gen 1 Monteros, a 2 and a 4 door. I loved them both, great rigs. I love the way yours looks, should be a lot of fun. Looks like it is in great shape for an old truck. Great find.

Thanks! It did well yesterday. We did about 40 miles of trail riding in the Ocala National forest.

This week just did a few things. New front O2 sensor, offset winch fairlead, new fan clutch, replaced the original power mirrors that were not working with these black ones which tie in the bumper and wheels and a bit of a history lesson with that front euro plate. Dakar 12/0. Just a fun item mentioning the 12 overall wins for Mitsu.

So I got the hitch installed and then put in the rear skid plate/tow point/step. The skid plate comes down under the hitch pretty flush so at least it will protect the rear bumper. I also need to find these damn body clips to put the rear bumper fascia back on. 5 of the 6 were broke and it was held in by the two bolts that were on the factory tow points.

I would go to a body shop or automotive paint supply place for those clips. I have had pretty good luck in the past at both those places.

I'm really digging that hitch step.

I did find the clips via another member on the 3rd Gen Montero FB page. This past weekend I did a few things. Painted the wiper arms and took out the no name group 24 battery and put in a interstate group 31 deep cycle. It’s a beast of a battery. I also zip tied the positive cable away from the battery mount but took a photo beforehand. Lol.

Appreciate that! I really do get a lot of looks and thumbs up. This past weekend we went trail riding and a guy stopped me for a photo. Lol. He was from South America and said they love them down there.
