What makes a rim good for off road?

I very much agree with this statement. It doesn't help when peoples opinions are based on outdated knowledge and rumors. When I was young, the old timers were afraid of aluminum rims. They would say, "you can hammer a steel rim back into shape to get you home but you cant on an aluminum"...

    Portable A/C unit

100% agree. 100 degrees isn't too bad as long as you have a fan blowing on you and low humidity. That's what I tolerated in my youth. Today....Yeah....Uh...no. My buddy's zero breeze netted him a 15 degree drop and no humidity. 80 ish degrees with a small fan and no humidity would have been...

    Portable A/C unit

Going by the posted wattage, 696 watts will produce 2373 BTU. We really want something over 5K for 100sq feet. That 10k unit you posted would be drastic overkill but, you could always leave it on low and use a heated blanket. The down side is on max, it pulls a constant 58 amps. All I want to...

    Portable A/C unit

On my post earlier, the intake was taken from inside the trailer.

    Portable A/C unit

Damn....What was your humidity? Here's the numbers my buddy gave me regarding his new Zero Breeze. Somewhere in Florida with about the same cubic feet, plugged into ac power. His batteries would only have lasted a few hours at best.... 100 degree ambient, 50% humidity. Four hours of running...

    Portable A/C unit

Ty. Looking at the web site, there were no pictures of the covers installed so I assumed they were for ducting the output. If I get one, it will be mounted externally with the air coming in through a port. When you do your testing, post outside temp and humidity as well as how long it took to...

    Portable A/C unit

Looking at the front, Is the top the outlet and the bottom the inlet? Also, the front cover allows you to duct the front in and out?

old_man's Offroad Teardrop Trailer Build Thread

This proves it. We drank from the hose, didn't use hand sanitizer, rode bikes without helmets and fell out of trees. This is why we live longer.

    Equipment insurance?

As I stated above. I did look into this. More than once. Across the forums, this pops up once in a while and I look into it. Correct, my home owners insurance will cover some but the amount it raises my insurance verses what it covers, makes it not worth it. My auto insurance just shook their...

    Water filtration

I have the same short cartridge in my trailer. I run a solid block carbon filter. It killed my flow rate but I like the filtering. If that is a UV filter, you don't have to worry about parasites and can get away with a better flowing filter.

    Water filtration

Looking at the picture of what's contained in the box, I see a single filter, pump and what looks like a UV filter. I'm sure the battery is in the bottom. I'm going to assume the prefilter is the strainer on the hose. Their also using a common quick disconnect on the hose. What I can see is they...

How to locate dispersed/primitive camping locations

Being a person who travels the western half, fire permits are a must and normally free. "Some" of the mapping software will mark primitive spots but remember, everyone else see's them. I find mine exploring. Most of the areas I travel are open to primitive camp. When driving down a marked route...

Yeah...huh...oop's. Back to our regular scheduled program (if you remember that one, you are old).

    Buy new or buy used.

Heh...yeah. There was another guy who he referred to that I "kind of" got into it with. This was where jerry got his suspension and brake info. Cant remember his name but he use to make stuff for TJ's. He had a suspension system, custom brakes and a half door. Branford was a nice guy with...

    Buy new or buy used.

I feel your pain. I pulled my diff's, regeared and installed eatons. I couldn't put them back in. It took a floor jack and another person. That was my most resent big turning point. My gear box replacement went....ok, i guess. Years ago, I bought an 04 TJ thinking, I'm done with re-engineering...

    Buy new or buy used.

is it because were older? You know, been there, done that? I'm actually getting tired of modding things. I want new, better fab tools for my shop but can no longer justify them. A new C&C plasma would be nice but, how much more metal work do I really want to do. Same with those new table top C&C...

    Buy new or buy used.

I'm going to agree yet disagree. For someone like me, a "PROPER" used vehicle is best. Yet, I find myself edging toward my new Tacoma and considering selling my Cruiser. This is because I'm getting burned out on its build and maintenance. Then again, there is no way I will be able to repair the...

Toyota Badge of Honor Trails - Part I

Doubtful. The guy who started this thread, made this one and "part 2". The threads were days apart and were the only posts he made. Five years later and he hasn't made another post. I saw an exact duplicate of this post in two other forums, made about the same time by the same guy. Looks like he...

    Dry Ice

I used it years ago when I did long desert camps. I had a 100 qt ice chest I would fill with blocks and a pack of dry ice on top. Th ice would last for several days before the temp would raise any. The down side to dry ice is its -109F. That will ruin any food you put in there. Ice starts to...
