Well I discovered I have a perfect local venue: Carnegie SVRA! I knew it was a great place for dirt biking but they also have a nice 4x4 obstacle course. I nearly busted my bumper when I rolled back off a boulder but overall it was a hellofa lot of fun! Fantastic place for training.

Cast Iron or No? (weight right now is not an issue for me)

I love this thread... I thought I was the only one that lugged around cast iron. Yes, it's totally worth it! I bring a 9 and 12 in., trivets, stands, tripod, charcoal, steel feed tray, fire gloves, straw brush, and cleaning supplies. Sounds like a lot but it all fits within 2-3 cubic feet of...

Thanks - great resources and advice. I want to get the basics down then headout with some of the Overland Bound members. The founder only lives 5 miles from me so I'm sure I could find someone to go with :-)

New to off-roading, is there any good instructors/classes in the Bay Area to help me get started right? I'm not going to be the guy that gets stuck in a ditch their first time out.

    Starting from square one

Thank you all so much for taking the time to give such thorough feedback! It's looking more and more like a Tacoma might be the right fit. I had been looking at new ones but I just came across a 2001 TRD, low miles for only $2000! Now I'm thinking I'll just pick that up and bring it up to date...

You've got me looking at Land Rovers again. I've just always heard how unreliable and expensive to maintain they are. They do look like fun though!

Hello all, I'm sure this has been covered a million times but I haven't found the answer yet. I would like to build an overland rig from the ground up but I need some advice on where to start. I've done a ton of research but I feel like I could do all the reading in the world but it'll never be...

Member Introductions *NEW MEMBERS INTRODUCE YOURSELF*

The name is John and I'm from Livermore, California. I don't have a rig yet, unless you count my Chrysler Pacifica fitted with kayak racks! I'm looking to setup a new rig for off-roading exploration and I'm here to get some advice... I'll be diving into the forums to see what I can find.
