Your idea is similar to a Thule Hullavator kayak lifting mechanism. Seems practical.

It's not pretty! Worse yet, is I did the same on my 4Runner. I'll fix it when my PrinSu rack gets here...

We already have the Yeti 50 that we bought last spring (RTIC was promising deliveries at that time 6 months or more out) but we just bought the RTIC 20 for short trips, overnighters, etc. It seems well made, and should last a long time.
