    OnX or Gaia

I am Gaia all the way. Absolutely the best one in my opinion. I love that it works really well on your PC when you are planning and building your routes. You can organize and save things really easily and then it just sync's with all your devices. I also love that it supports apple carplay...

    Spare tire carrier

I would recommend the Rigd tire carrier. As hitch carriers go it is by far the best. I have two friends who had issues with the Wilco carriers "wearing out" after about a year and becoming a rattling mess. I have noticed that while following behind my buddies Tacoma the rigd doesn't move...

HAM vs. GMRS - The Great Debate

You are definitely right about tying up the repeaters. We post on Facebook when we are going to have larger events or NETs that are going to tie up the network for a couple hours trying to be courteous to all the other users. It can definitely be annoying when you want to use the network and...

HAM vs. GMRS - The Great Debate

Great point. I am still waiting to see this fee drop. They have been talking about doing this for a while but guys I know are still paying the 70 bucks. I agree on the usability. I think that is why I really like the Midland products. They already come programed and are easy to install and...

HAM vs. GMRS - The Great Debate

Totally agree. I really do not understand why if you are a HAM, you do not automatically have access to the GMRS bands. You would think that having the more "Studied" classification would be enough. I guess it is probably due to the FCC's ability to collect fees.

    New to the overland community

Hellow Michael and welcome to OB. I used to live in Charlotte for many years and we have a place up in Linville, NC still. You are in a great spot for wheeling my friend. uwharrie national forest is great for day trips and they hold a lot of off-road and overland events there. It is...

HAM vs. GMRS - The Great Debate

I am with you. All the folks I wheel with are either CB (and I am trying to talk them into GMRS) or GMRS.

Mike and Denise, Let us know whenever you are heading up this way and if we are free we might be able to link up with ya'll and run the trail west to east. We live about 45 min drive from Helen and we have been known to dive up to the Sunrise Grocery by Vogel just to grab boiled peanuts and...

    Georgia Traverse Trail

Great Question. I would highly recommend staying on the main trail route. You can find the main route .GPX files on Georgia Overland's Website: The Georgia Traverse Download Page - GEORGIA OVERLAND The main trail has a fair amount of traffic and most all of us carry chainsaws. When a tree...

HAM vs. GMRS - The Great Debate

My dad and I are split on this. He is an old ham K0AJ and I am a big GMRS guy WRME413 / ATL-699. He says ham is better and that I am just being lazy for not taking the test. I tell him that GMRS is more accessible and all the overlanders I know use it. He says HAM has way more repeaters. I...

    Campground or Boondock?

Boondocking is all we are willing to do. Our friends think we are crazy but I did not go all the way out there to camp right next to people we don't know. Is it really camping? For us, very easy choice. Plus, I love setting off on a trip and having no idea where we are going to set up that...

    12v auxiliary plug for fridge

I bought this off of amazon for around 20 bucks and I pulled 10 gage wire back directly from the battery. I used an in-line fuse at the battery terminal to ensure safety. It powers my 50 liter fridge / freezer no problem. I can also use the usb plugs to power the lights in the roof top tent...

    Camp Toilet

We have had good luck with this one. Only thing I would mention is we had to snap off two of the tabs on the legs because it clipped them so tight you could not get it out. Once I made this minor tweak with some needle nose pliers it has been good to go. Fits great in the Trasharoo and...
