Shorter trailers are harder to back up and harder to balance. Longer trailers are heavier and harder to get down a trail. Finding the balance of "want VS need" is tough and its something you should address before you break out the credit card.
Where are you going to be taking the...
Usually the added weight is minimal unless you are running 35+" tires. Additionally the larger the OD of the tire the less revolutions per mile the tire has to spin... this means less heat in the bearings. While Im not saying everyone should run 37" tires on a trailer, I do advise that you do...
I ride a Transition Smuggler(full suspension 29er) here in Western Colorado. I added a 130mm MRP racing Stage front fork and spend quite a bit of time out on the amazing singletrack in my area.
The best advice I can give you before spending money on a new bike is to go and demo a few. Find out...
It's good to mention that on a JK make sure you get a rack that's supported by metal. If the rack mounts through the hardtop, make sure it has brackets that go through to the roll cage like the Frontrunner or Teraflex racks. Going through the roof to actual structure is what gives those racks...
Frontrunner racks are well made and hold 600lbs. Plus they have a large assortment of accessories to go with them.

This might be a day late, dollar short but if you have a trailer that needs weight distribution hitch absolutely get sway control with it. Do not buy a WD hitch with chains only. I dont know what you are towing with or trying to tow but Equal-i-zer, Fastway and Reese all make nice ones.
Moab Camping:
If you want to be close to town and still have trails right out the zippered door of your tent you can stay at Sand Flats Recreation Area. Its first come-First serve but spots turn over everyday. You will have access to Fins N things, Hells Revenge, Porcupine Rim and Sand Flats...
I will be out at Easter Jeep Safari again this year enjoying the beautiful Moab spring weather. It would be great to meet some other OB members out there and run a trail or two.... or just trade stories.
If anyone is going to be out there, post up and lets make a plan!!
Having options is always a nice thing and having a trailer with a 2" receiver on the front give you just that. I personally prefer a standard 2" ball or Max-Coupler which is why they are the only options on the trailers I make. A 2" ball will articulate quite a bit and can be used on most...

There are a few options for a large family it just depends on your budget and how difficult the trails you want to run are.
If you are leaning towards more camping and exploring dirt roads you can go with a Ford Expedition or Chevy Tahoe. For easy to moderate trails you can get yourself into a...

I live 90 miles away in Fruita, CO and spend about a week a month down there exploring and camping until the desert gets too hot and I go up in elevation for the summer.
White Rim, Lockhart Basin, Elephant Hill/Beef Basin if you want to limit your adventure to dirt. If you dont mind some pavement time, go down to Natural Bridges National Monument and return Via the Moki Dugway/Mexican Hat. Its paved the whole way but the scenery is amazing.
Im in Moab a lot so...
Yes, it is a 2 way road. If you only want to go one way you can get back out to Moab on Potash Rd. (Bottom of the switchbacks, first road on the left).
