New to Overlanding - Vehicle Recommendations

You'll love that RAM. We had a '19 1500 with the 3.92s and similar options (33gal tank, rear locker/off road package, etc) and it was a great truck. With just a leveling kit it sat great on 35x12.5-20" tires. I don't think the rig would hamper you in any way for most/all Overlanding. It...

1975 K5 -- someone talk me off the ledge!

I love that idea. It's something a good buddy of mine talk about all the time: fly somewhere, buy a vehicle, get camping gear and tools at a Walmart or whatever, and Overland our way home. Obviously we stole the idea from Roadkill, Dirt Every Day etc. (really just David Freiburger). I say...

1975 K5 -- someone talk me off the ledge!

I am a "Chevy fan" but gawd I still love those Ramcharger/Traildusters (I want a Trailduster, just to be a bit more Mopar-weirdo :p ) and as a FWC owner those ones with the FWC grafted on are the ultimate in cool! I'd love to build one "someday." -TJ

1975 K5 -- someone talk me off the ledge!

Gotcha... it sounds like it could be the "right" project for you if it's not a total rust-bucket. I suspect you could handle the manual conversion if you're just going with something like a SM465 that could have been optioned originally in it. I helped a buddy do that swap on a '72... it was...

1975 K5 -- someone talk me off the ledge!

Yes and no. There are some requirements on a '75 in CA... BUT there is no smog check on '75 and older to verify any of it so it's sort of a free-for-all on a '75. -TJ

'75... so no smog right? Be very, very sure it's really a '75 by VIN cuz that would change everything for you being in CA. Other than that, I say do it - but I'm kind of an idiot. I love K5s, and had many friends that had them growing up so I have a soft spot for them and lots of great...

    Big Rigs, Full Sized Only

It's being done at WFO, all their parts/work: https://www.wfoconcepts.com/cr/Chevy-GMC-2500-3500-HD-2011-19/9105/19493 It'll be a '05+ Super Duty Super 60 axle, WFO's fabricated radius rods, King or Fox coil overs (we're still working on availability, obviously things are tough as far as...

SOLD (SOLD): West - 2018 SoCal Teardrops 459 Krawler - $22,999 - Las Vegas, NV - Willing to help with delivery up to ~500 miles

I actually don't have any pics of mine with the awnings deployed. To be honest, I personally didn't use them because I always was either on the move daily, or tucked myself into the trees. Here are some pics of other Socal's with awnings, annex rooms (which I have for both sides, one is 3-wall...

How much does the look affect your choice?

I'll be honest... I care about looks. It's not my #1 determining factor, but I'll admit they matter somewhat to me. I always loved the look of the WJs, so I built one. I always thought my '11 Silverado 2500HD would look better with a solid axle and 37"s, so I'm doing that too. Of course...

    Ready to begin

How mechanically inclined are you, and how much do you *enjoy* working on rigs? If the answers aren't "very" and "a lot" respectively, skip the Disco IMHO. And I'm not knocking Discos, to be clear. I actually really love them and still want to do a Disco build "one of these days." I just...

FINALLY got a truck to build out! 2021 F-150

Nice rig, it should make a great Overlander. I'm not familiar with kits for F150s, but I'd look at brands like Camburg, Icon, etc. to see if they offer something. A spacer leveling kit will work, especially while it's brand new and the stock shocks are in good shape. However, I always prefer...

    Duramax overlander?

I haven't done any of the TAT yet, which is why I can't speak to it specifically. I've watched a lot of vid on it, including ones with larger vehicles like vans, so as a broad generality I think it'd be fine in a D'max - but I can't say from first-hand experience. I think a few tracks I've...

    Duramax overlander?

I can't speak for all of the trails in the TAT, I'd start doing research watching YT videos and maybe find thread on it here. I'm sure there will be "tight" spots, and bringing a chainsaw will be a must. But I don't suspect there'd be sections that are simply unpassable in a Fool Size because...

SOLD (SOLD): West - 2018 SoCal Teardrops 459 Krawler - $22,999 - Las Vegas, NV - Willing to help with delivery up to ~500 miles

Seriously, make an offer - I'm somewhat motivated to just get it gone before I break down and decide to just keep it for my Vegas-based rig... -TJ

    Duramax overlander?

'06 is a great year, it should be a LBZ and the six speed Allison, but pre-DPF/DEF: one of the most desired combos in the diesel truck world. What are you worried about as far as strength? Tie-rods in '01-10 GM HD trucks are a little weak, but the aftermarket has great upgrades. It's...
