The level of detail I am looking for is the "where are you going to sleep?" "how many days of self-sufficiency (i.e. how much food and water do you plan to carry)?" "what sort of equipment do you plan to be carrying around (mountain bike? dirt bike? camera gear? work related gear?)? etc.
It...
If you could share your vision with us (there is not much detail in what you have posted) we could probably give you better advice.
If the priority is the ability to take punishment I will strongly encourage you to look at solid front axle trucks and scratch all the IFS trucks off the list...
The Bride insists on accommodations with flushing toilets and showers at least every third day.
It might be wise to start off with trips that make it easy to adopt a "Plan B" in the event things don't go smoothly. Things like a torrential downpour that soaks all your gear for instance...
Dayum...
Where to start...
This is my life...
We have been homeschooling for 10 years now. Homeschooling and Overlanding (or camping--I don't care what you call it) go hand in glove for us. A week ago today we were on the road to the Mojave to spend the long weekend camping out with...
I have the same conundrum with my XJ and the factory bars. Those brackets do not lend themselves to mounting to factory bars. I have thought about making some aluminum adapter plates that would go between those brackets and the factory bars, but I am tempted to go for something even simpler...
The 285 width is not likely to help your mileage. The extra height might be better for freeway mileage, but the width means more resistance. if you need the height to get the gearing where you want it (and I understand that--same picture with my Cummins dually) then look into a higher profile...
BTW, have you considered airbags?
With airbags you could maintain your current height, but add some extra height when needed. In fact, done right, you could control each airbag individually from the driver's seat.
Just another approach to consider.
I would contact National Spring. If they don't have the answers you need they should at least know where to go next in order to get the answers.
The offroad shops are generally in the business of installing parts you can find in a catalog, particularly a catalog they already have. They rely...
Okay. That is a capable vehicle. And with a trailer to boot.
Even looks like it would haul the whole family. And The Bride would be happy about not sleeping in a tent.
Where do I get one?
I think that falls in the same category as Roadkill Garage.
Sure, you can drag some junker out of the rubbish heap and go road tripping with it, but that doesn't make it a good idea. It might be entertaining, but certainly not prudent.
Some of us have families and need to make more...
If you ask the National Park Service their answer is "Yes."
I have seen trails designated as 4-low required. I believe the Schafer trail is one.
It is going to come down to what are you trying to do? Most things do not require it. Some do. It is the same as the discussion about overlanding...
I like it.
But you know that M88 will never catch on as an overlanding rig. No RTT. No bumper mounted spare tire. No aftermarket support at all.
OTOH, I would love to see the look on the faces of the HOA types when they see one of those parked on the street in their neighborhood.
That is my thought. I don't expect a vehicle to get close to game, but if you can get out there without scaring all the game away then your odds have improved.
I can imagine some heads exploding when they discover "their" pet technology has been put to work to bring home Bambi.
Yep!
The military put those things through their paces. And if the military has changed anything they have gone even bigger.
There is a comparison to be made in the Baja 1000 with the Terrible Herbst "Tiburon". The Herbsts turned the Baja 1000 world on its ear by building a vehicle much...
