I got to run around in one of those (milsurp) trucks with a SAR group. Other than putting in a switch to manually run the plugs, that truck ran like a champ. Started well (when started on a daily basis), didn't overheat in 115 degree weather, made good power, 0-60 in fifteen minutes...........
Diamond and Comet seem to be the most popular for mobile, though due to size limits, you're going to be generally limited to 10m for a hard mounted antenna. What kind of ability do you want in your rig?

I wouldn't knock the rig for SOTA. I just wouldn't run it at 100% output. A lot of folks run QRP in order to not hump lots of power supply gear. IIRC, no generators allowed in SOTA, including vehicle alternators. Wind, solar, and battery only. I think. A lot of folks run very small QRP...
