Let’s Go Digital on the move

You’re welcome. The first thing I did when I got my TNC3 was updated the firmware. What modes of digital are you running? Should I get into RTTY, PSK, FT8. DMR, SDR? Or keep going the way I have been going?

Anyone use HF in the mobile?

The IC-7100 has two PL-259 connectors for coax, ANT1 is for HF and ANT2 is for UHF/VHF capabilities. So for UHF/VHF a simple diamond UHF/VHF mobile antenna would suffice. For the Hf bands I am using Shark Ham Sticks for 160m-6m. Now this comes with a compromise, it’s one antenna per band, so...

Anyone use HF in the mobile?

If you get the accessory GPS dongle the IC-7100 can do APRS as well. The IC-7100 is a very good radio it does almost everything, it just doesn’t do everything well.

Let’s Go Digital on the move

Yes there is a data limit on APRS, hence I’m going to try and dive into WinLink next. I started with the cheapest and easiest method of getting on the air digitally, and progressively moving up the ladder to the harder and more expensive methods. WinLink is a little more complicated to set up...

    The Tri-Cities Clubhouse

Thanks for sharing this Lou. I haven’t driven the road in several years, but @St0ll3n drove it a few weeks a go and said the roads are decent, wash boards are rough in places, but nothing to hard core. I expect it to be a realitivly easy day trip, lots of amazing views. It is hunting season...

Let’s Go Digital on the move

So now that we have some of the lingo out of the way let’s move on to what we need to start operating digitally. 1: a radio system with 2: TNC 3: some kind of digital device like a Laptop, Raspberry Pi, or in some cases a cell phone or tablet will work. I’m cheap... I hate spending money on...

Let’s Go Digital on the move

I was asked a while back, “how to work digitally while on the road?” I don’t mean using cell phones, or electronic navigation devices, we are talking sending and receiving emails over the air waves via UVH/VHF and HF frequencies, and using Digital Repeater Networks like DMR, System Fusion...

Yaesu FT-7900R install in my 2020 Jeep JLUR

Lou, you’re going to want to make some kind of enclosure for that speaker... it’s going to sound tinny.

Anyone use HF in the mobile?

Biggest advantage of the MARs/CAP mod as it pertains to you the ability to use gmrs and MURS frequencies. And yes you can use the frequencies in an emergency.

    Buying a Vehicle for Overlanding

A 6.5’ bed is big enough for a queen mattress... with the tailgate up. I slept in the back in -10 weather and had to turn the heater off, remember your living in a smaller space. As for a diesel rig, get a pre 2000 model Ford or Dodge (stay away from the GM diesels as the 6.2 and 6.5s had...

    A good nights sleep

I found myself sleeping out of boredom... out at the shooting range waiting 4 hours for my turn... yup find me sleeping on the rock pile. For a good night sleep these days while out on the trails, I just find a good rock pile then I feel at home.

    Buying a Vehicle for Overlanding

My Old Ram 2500 is about the size of the F-350 you propose (6.5 bed instead of ait was an all around good rig... just too heavy for deep snow, which is where I like to be. I lived out of the back for almost a year comfortably. I don’t think I would have wanted an 8’ bed... I was able to have...

    Bumper fabrication cost?

950 is reasonable... I was going to say expect to pay 1,000 and up for a custom bumper... my 2nd gen Ram bumper was 2500.00 but it was a lot of bending of 1.5” 0.25” wall Cold Roll steel tubing, and then plating the framework of the bumper with 18 gauge steel. I would have them build in a...

Anyone use HF in the mobile?

I’m not knocking HTs they have their uses, but I hate listening to them in the repeaters. Using a HT for trails coms on simplex very doable... I’m running into a problem of not enough radios. I use my 7100 for everything right now. HF, UHF/VHF, Phone, Digital, and CW. Recently I was elected...

Anyone use HF in the mobile?

The Icom IC-7100 with a MARS MOD can do what you’re asking. It’s a great little radio. Watch for it to come on sale through HRO and spend the extra 35 for the MARs MOD.
