    NMBDR/Lincoln NF

Camp for night 2. Was a pretty spot but we had high winds all night. Finally into the pine trees. Nice little private house/land along this forrest route. There were scattered patches of mud everywhere with some full sections of the road with a slick layer on top. Small stream at a...

    NMBDR/Lincoln NF

Took a few days out of spring break and loaded my daughter up and headed for the Lincoln Ntl Forrest and the New Mexico BDR. WE got a late start on the day so made it as far as White's City close to Carlsbad Caverns and setup camp on small square of BLM land just south of White's City...

    Let them eat SPAM!

The tuna shelf was completely full in my local Wal Mart. Weird. Same thing most of the spam was gone except the single slice spam packs.

    Overlanding with "stock" 4X4

In the states they were Wranglers since the YJ came out. XJs have been around since 84 (YJ started in 86) so long before the LJ existed. Interesting info on that GM truck name. YJs had more in common with CJs than XJs. As time progressed the YJs and XJs shared most of their drivetrain with...

National Forest Maps for Dispersed Camping

Dispersed camping in a National Forrest is everywhere not marked as no camping so not sure what you are looking for. If you have a National Forrest map the whole thing is a campsite unless marked otherwise. I know some areas have "yellow post" sites but I think I've only found one map for one...

Add GMRS callsign to profile information?

I just put my GMRS call sign in my signature. You can just put your GMRS call in the HAM call spot in your profile as well if you don't have both. YOu can also put your GMRS call in with your HAM call in the profile. If you go to my member info to the left you can hover over the "ham...

    Overlanding with "stock" 4X4

NOt a Wrangler but I ran no carpet/padding in a previous XJ of mine for about a week then put it back in as fast as I could. It was miserably hot and loud.

    Emergency GPS Locators

I've used gen 1, 2 and 3 spots. Never had the ones you can send custom messages with but never felt the need to have that feature either. with the OK, HELP, and 911 buttons on the units. I left them mostly over cost. Their prices would creep up year after year with no prior warning from the...

    Ozark camp site suggestion?

Check the weather. You'll probably need a kayak to get out of there. Calling for heavy rain starting Friday and going all weekend. I was headed that direction starting tomorrow but have diverted to Lincoln National forrest due to weather in Northern NM, OK, and AR.

    Overlanding with "stock" 4X4

Oh look another sorta "what is overlanding/an overlanding vehicle" thread turned into another D&*K measuring contest. Who would have thought it.

    Lincoln National Forest suggestions

Was going to do Ozark but forecast is calling for a full weekend of heavy rain so setting my sights westward instead. Ill have about 2 days and 2 nights there. Ive been to all the touristy stuff on paved roads via motorcycle. Looking for dispersed camping spots, overlooks, little known...

    Fire on the ground.

Wildfires are part of the balance. I think packing out ashes is a bit overboard. If you don't want to leave them out you could dig a hole or slit trench and bury them they'd be far moreuseful in/on the ground than in a garbage bag in a landfil. I like doing dakota fire pits, low profile...

    Navigation Setup

I used to be a stand alone GPS guy then started using cell and tablet based nav and never looked back. I still keep a Garmin unit around with lifetime maps to update Garmin Basecamp but my primary is now GAIA backed up by Backcountry Nav and offline googlemaps.

Portable Communications - Off the deep end

I keep a FT90R in my solar generator case and a roll up antenna I toss up in a tree. Right now I'm throwing together a lightweight 10 foot or so antenna mast to post up out of my front receiver hitch.

    GMRS Radio!

Me:"This is WQYH678 mobile, and monitoring" Someone else:"Good afternoon, this is WXYZ123 how are you doing today?" Then we carry on our conversation for a however long. I've never kept exact track of how long I've carried on a conversation if I feel like it's been a while I may say after or...

    Your Camping Tables Recommendations...

I cut out a 3/4 in piece of OSB that fits in my cargo area floor. When the hatch is open it slides between the seal lip and bumper and I have a 2x4 cut as a single leg for the end of the table with a bolt that drops it to keep it from getting kicked out.

    Fallen trees on the trail

I've been to a few saw courses though the Fire Department. They were useful. Far better than just picking up a saw and going to town with no experience, but common sense can go a long way. And saw chaps. They can really save your legs. A chainsaw is insanely dangerous if used improperly.
