On anything longer than an overnighter I put the Front Runner footwell water tank in the XJ. It's 11 gallons. More than I've ever used before, either hitting civilization for gas or coming across a water source I could filter if I really needed to.
So do I. It's never been an issue. Nearly every smart device takes a SD memory card most measured in hundreds of gigabytes. I can load multiple states worth of maps if I need to. If you can drive across multiple states and never see a cell signal.........you probably don't have a cell phone...
Meh. I've never been impressed with Midland handhelds. There are cheaper more capable options out there, that are probably just as or more tough. Midland doesn't even have a GMRS handheld that can be used on repeaters.
It has its advantages. We have a repeater locally that covers 40 or 50 mile radius. Its quite useful. Even before the fee change you're talking about 7 dollars a year. Just a WAG but I'm guessing you waste a lot more than 7 dollars a year on crap far more useless than a GMRS license.
I've got a long history of Garmin use via motorcycle GPS units. Hassle free is not how I would describe them. Especially when it comes to updates and their basecamp software. And 1300 dollars is a lot of gas, and would buy you a lot of smart phones or tablets.
I use them around the house, on trips, for group runs (I have a bunch of handout radios), ect ect. We have a local repeater that covers our whole county and parts of neighboring counties. You won't see too much extra range vs a FRS radio when using handhelds. The biggest advantage is the...
This is the disadvantage of buying the tanks like Powertank. I can't exchange those most times but I can take a CO2 bottle I got from a welding supply store and exchange it or fill it depending on the circumstances.
Got the CJ2's rear axle put back together. Will put it under the frame tomorrow morning and I'll have a rolling chassis again :) Feel like I'm getting back in the groove on that. I hit a similar wall with the CJ5 where I didn't work on it for like a month or made very little progress.
I've got the HAM versions of the following radios. Both work great and the 25 watt model is pretty compact.

Most of their mobiles except for the 5 watt mobile can. None of the handhelds can. The Midlands get the job done but there are tons of others out there now flooding the market that are more feature rich.

I'd personally steer clear of Rugged Radios, they way overprice...
