Overlanding in a Full-Size Truck - Comfortable family rig or doomed like the Titanic?

So you are actually talking about what use old guys called a crew cab - 4 door pickup. Your limitations are turning radius mostly, and here the Pacific Northwest cross ditches due to your length. But having said that we have a member up here with a Land Rover D-130 king cab at just shy of...

Questions on overlanding with a pup

A few things, from watching others with dogs: Ticks are an issue in many places check your dog everyday, they are easier to deal with right away and less chance of tick related illness Raised dog beds are great to keep your dog out of the dirt and crap on the ground If there are other dogs...

Let's see those rigs in action

Not your typical rigs in action but: Out for a drive yesterday and had an interesting experience. Around 10 am I saw this heli moving along the power lines. At 4:30 heading home a white pickup pulled up beside me, he was one of the fellows in the heli, and air-dropped me this video. The...

Let's see those rigs in action

Out with my Land Rover group in one the few bits of BC not on fire Got a bit sideways trying to dodge a overhang. :tearsofjoy: I am on the other side helping cut the overhang down One group of fires in the distance about 30 miles I think

    Something Weird in the Forest

@DintDobbs maybe it is age or upbringing, but my instinct is always to stop and help, but I did grow up before not trusting strangers was the thing it is now. Maybe rose colored glasses, overconfidence in my ability to get out of trouble or both. I will never however fault someone for making...

    Something Weird in the Forest

@Tommys That is a tough one but you have to go with what you feel, you did not feel right so you left that is all you can do. The more significant issue is the one several people have touched on, we no longer trust anyone we do not know. Although that statement is an exaggeration and...

    RTT AC

If you have an RTT that can fit a winter insulation cover like at Tepui Ayer this might be viable. But 5-8 hour max runtime and a standard RTT I am not sure how much it will help it would actually be. 1500.00 is pretty steep in my mind for the Sero Breeze and it has issues battery charge time...

Never seen a post about keepin' clean in the bush

Standard sized wash basin and a hand cloth, just warm some water up. As noted above a bit of soap and you get clean. It does not take a lot of water.

The Big Decision, RTT or Ground Tent

Always an interesting discussion - but for me an RTT. I can and have a platform in the back of my Discovery that I can sleep on in high winds or heavy rain. But the RTT is my preferred location, I can literally stop anywhere that is mostly level and the Disco fits into, and here in the PNW...

    DB or PB

I think it is another use case thing. A small portable works for me, but I have no fridge, or other huge draws so it fine. It charges while driving and I rarely stay in one place for more than a couple of days.

    BC Overland Rally 2023

@landyandy4x4 @CR-Venturer Yup there are a whack of us land rover guys in BC, not sure how many you will see this year from the BC Roverlander's, but there are usually a few. You can check out the Club if you are interested The Rover-Landers of BC - Index page

Is the Overlanding community killing itself

Both interesting articles, the second one about car camping and overlanding was more interesting because the 2 are really the same, it is just about where you can go. I took a 4 door Honda Accord down the west coast of Vancouver Island a long time ago, 10 days largely on Forest Service roads...

    Is ATRAC best avoided?

Traction control takes a different driving mentality. Punching to get past an obstacle is not a good thing, the idea is a more gradual throttle up. I have a brake-based traction control on my 04 LR Discovery and it works well but it took me a while to figure out how to drive to get the best...

    Repairs, tools, off-roading training

@Advtres Even a basic Red Cross first aid course is valuable, but you need to take a refresher every couple of years Map and Compass are very useful, you can take a course or get hold of a military publication on the subject, a couple of important notes : Distance traveled estimation can be...

    Overlanding with an EV

I just completed a 600 mile /1000KM trip in BC, and as a result of this discussion kept track of charging stations. The 1st leg was about 300 KM , and were several charging options in between that were non-Tesla with open spots, but only 2 or 3 chargers. At Kamloops the 1/2 point has lots of...

    Overlanding with an EV

@EV-offroad You are right in that many of us want to travel large distances and for some of us that is the norm. You are in Maryland a very very tiny place, last weekend I went for a short overnight trip with my Land Rover group we traveled about 110 miles to the trailhead for our meetup point...

    Overlanding with an EV

It is part of the problem with EV marketing - they keep talking about repairs but in normal use a new ICE and EV would have no significant repair costs over the 1st 7 years. Brakes on the maybe twice on both. So what is left oil changes and air filter changes and that is pretty trivial as...

    Overlanding with an EV

@MazeVX that makes sense the higher load on the motors equates to more battery draw so less range. Drones and R/C helos exhibited the same using lithium batteries, you lose between a 1/4 and 1/3 for flight times flying in sport or hi performance modes. Of course, there is no regenerating...

    Overlanding with an EV

The problem with EV's for overland is simply range, there is no overcoming that. There will not be charging stations in the middle of the wilderness, there is literally never going to be enough use to justify it. Real-world example my land rover groups did about 700 miles in southern BC, with...
