Stubby antennas are a compromise. That's not to say they aren't good, only that they have limitations.
I use a stubby antenna when there are height restrictions. Keep in mind, though, that range is limited. I also always carry a full size antenna in the car in case I need more range.
This comment gives me anxiety! hahahaha
Haha. Agreed! The difference in performance is significant versus fender mounting and such.
But not everyone has it in them to put a hole in a roof... and I get it. The good news is, lots of different mounting solutions provide sufficient performance...
It all depends on what you're wanting to do. There is almost unlimited exploring to be done on very easy roads. And, most people are shocked to see what a stock vehicle is capable of with a decent driver at the wheel.
Prerun class! Haha.
We go down to provide communications support to any and all racers but rarely race. For the past few years, we've gone early for the 1000, prerun the course, eat tacos, and have a good time... way more fun than racing! For the other races, we get in, get our work done...
There you go! As with any transmissions, it’s all about getting your antenna out there. I use a similar set up for work. Although, we rarely put the cell antenna up as we can usually position ourselves where we can pick up a cell tower or, there’s just no way and we use satellite service...
I put some of these in all our work vehicles and just recently got to use them... like them a lot. They're super easy to adjust and require no tools... very cool.
Welcome, fellow Bronco fan.
Those rigs have tons of aftermarket support and, with their current popularity, the sky is the limit for bolt-on suspension goodies.
Great post. This sums up my findings as well. We carry them (for work) but rarely pull them out simply because we haven't found them to be worth the effort. We added satellite internet for one vehicle. It works anywhere but is incredibly expensive and is used sparingly.
I've used several from different manufacturers... priced from 2-3 hundred dollars to 6 hundred dollars. I have yet to find one I can definitively say makes a noticeable difference. In my opinion, save your money for something worth while. Or, if you find one that works, let me know and I'll...
We ended up staying at Dome Rock Campground, which is free BLM land. It's a little close to the freeway but the price is right and it's only a quick detour.

Hi all,
The family and I are headed to Rocky Point Mexico and need to find a place to stay tomorrow evening near Blythe or Quartzsite. Does anyone know of a decent place for a truck (camper) and open trailer? I'm hoping to find something close to the freeway. The original plan was to stay in...
Maybe your solution is 2 antenna mounts? One up high with little to no obstruction and another down low where the antenna won't get broken off by branches and such. When you're in a wooded area, run the antenna on the low mount, when you're in open areas, use the high mount. As long as you...
Trimming the antenna to keep the overall length the same would be ideal. It would help to use an SWR meter to tune it, but if you're already getting the range you need, you'll probably be fine after adding the spring and trimming.
You could also use a single-sided headset which would leave one ear open to the outside world. Of course, that defeats some of the purpose, but makes it legal for the street. I've used headsets on dirt roads and trails for years and have never been questioned, though.
Hi All,
SteveG here from GoFastBroncos.com. I am a long-time Desert Racing enthusiast that also has a soft spot for all things Overland. While I sold my Bronco a few years ago, I generally get my off-road and go-fast cravings out of my system through work (quite the bonus, yes) but the bug is...
