    1988 ('06) E350 Van Build

Yikes! I hope the fix isn't as expensive as it sounds.

Yep, I'm lucky there, this was the wife's idea! We looked at Sportsmobile, Quigley, etc. and they're uber cool (and uber spendy), but we didn't really want some of the features they have (full winnebago style interior, water tanks, soft top, bathroom, etc.), so she said "Why don't you just build...

So we got some more done, with pictures! Found some super duty style tow mirrors, and with a bit of finagling they fit. Much better than the tripod mirrors I had. Lots of insulation work in the top and part of the sides (still have more wiring to do, so the sides aren't done yet). We decided to...

What size tires are you going to use with the 4:30s?

    Blackstone

Same thing we use, a Blackstone and a single burner. The Blackstone will handle 90% or better of what I eat when we're camping. Single burner takes care of coffee or soup.

I just got them on eBay. I was able to find the complete set-up, used, for all four windows (back and side doors). Don't drive with the backs open! You'll get gassed out, and dust will just roll in. Here is a how-to link from the sportsmobile forum...

Just to prove we get out of the driveway once in a while, here's a camping picture before we got the top done.

    Our van build

Just got back from Fiberine, new 20" aero top installed! The drive to/around/back from LA was miserable, but the folks at Fiberine really took care of us. Top notch installation, no leaks, trim around the cut out metal (so I don't split my clumsy head open), max air fan installed, and got it...

Finally got out in the van

We did! We were up by where we met up, but farther East of the highway. Got to play with Gaia a little, fished a bit, and wandered around some old forest service trails. Nice break from town and work...

Finally got out in the van

More camping than overlanding, but we did get out for a few days on the North Fork of the Boise river. We got the chance to evaluate our planned build, and see what we're missing/what we don't actually need. One disappointing note was the amount of trash we picked up around the camp and on...

Any radio wave propagation gurus on hand?

Thanks! I was thinking it worked like that, but I really don't understand the theory.

Any radio wave propagation gurus on hand?

Got a question about antenna ground planes. We are adding a fiberglass high top to a van. We will also have a rack that mounts to the drip rails. When they cut out the steel roof for the high top, we are leaving about two feet of the original roof intact in front (over the driver/passenger...

No worries! We're pretty stoked about this project.

The front suspension brackets are tricky. All the conversion companies pretty much make their own brackets. The conversion I'm doing uses coil springs and a late model coil spring front axle/swing arms. Done incorrectly, death wobble will cause you grief, so I'm going with someone who already...

More work! Dealt with the rusty bumper and some electrical projects. Installed a Redarc brake controller and a pair of KC lights I had on hand, and changed out the headlights and tail lights with halogens.

Found the right thing in U.K., how do I get it in U.S.?

No, I stopped when I looked up the folding faucet (not included) that goes with this. The listing for the faucet says it won't ship outside the U.K. But, like I said, My wife found a place that will ship to the U.S., 320 bucks delivered. I do appreciate the effort folks put into looking for a...
