  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

    CB signal

You still haven't addressed whether this was in receive or transmit and if there was a station you were receiving. That'll help answer your original question as well.

    Generator: Honda vs Predator

Ok. I just didn't quite understand where you were going worth the original comment. I'd bet my $150 80's vintage 8hp Maxa 4kW peak unit makes 80dB sitting unused in the garage. I'd have to have a good run of cord to use it comfortably at a campsite. I've been considering one of these inverter...

    Generator: Honda vs Predator

Are you talking about the regular generators or inverter type? The generator you usually find has to maintain RPM to keep the proper output frequency so they are generally louder than the inverter types that generate DC power and then use an inverter to create the AC wave-form power. This...

    Steel Wheel vs. Alloy Wheel

Something else to think about is that a lot of aftermarket steel wheels (and aluminum wheels as well) have very poor weight ratings and have a center made without the ability to spring back which is why so many bend under otherwise easy use. If I was going to run steel wheels, I would try to...

    CB signal

SWR of 1:1 is ideal. 1.5:1 will not be a noticeable issue for most of what CB is capable of though. 11m (cb frequencies) do not propagate well or for long distances unless there is solar activity to affect the ionosphere and carry their signals ("skip"), which is why it was chosen as the...

    CB signal

Signal strength is dictated by many things. Propagation, the weather, proximity to the other transmitter, coax quality and length, and many other things. You'll have to provide a little more information about who you are receiving and the terrain as well.

    Locktite on CB antenna

Loc-tite doesn't conduct. I've never had one come loose before, what part is causing the problem?

    Coffee Set Ups

I'm usually boiling water for oatmeal so I can mix that and fill my French press from the same pot. I really wish I could stomach eggs, the theory of an omelet sounds amazing, but I'd vomit after the first bite in reality.

    Favorite Trail Meals

Breakfast has been sausage or bacon and oatmeal, occasionally a banana or something like that with it. Lunch is sandwich and hot&spicy cheezits generally, then supper is whatever we decided on buying groceries. Last time it was steak fajita with Mexican style rice and Tecate with lime. I'm...

    What boots do members wear

I have sandals as well but I've done quite bit of damage to toes hiking and working in them. I try to reserve them for hanging out in the yard. Forgot I was in then one time in the garage until a big glob of slag dropped between my toes...

    What boots do members wear

Merrell Moab high top shoes. I wore steel toe Red Wing Pecos boots for years but I've decided I like the lighter weight of the shoes on the trail. I've got both the ventilated and water proof ones but I think I like the ventilated better. I usually have a spare pair of shoes with me if they get...

    Jefferson National Forest

Well, where in Grayson will you be Friday? That'll give me am idea of the best route for the best views and maybe I can think of another campground to visit as well? There are tons of great back roads and neat places to check out in that area. When I got my driver's license, my friends and I...

    Jefferson National Forest

The lake is supposedly named for my Mom's great uncle. I'm not sure the validity of that story, but a Hale is a Hale and they're the only group in the valley! The trails I mentioned there are hiking trails. I should have clarified that some I'm sorry. Which way are you going to be going in...

    Automatic or manual transmission?

When it comes to keeping an automatic cool, paying attention to your rpm and manually setting gears during long pulls is key. If you notice your transmission changing gears a lot on a climb, move the gear selector to the next lowest gear. Shifting back and forth (shuttling) and running a gear...

    Jefferson National Forest

I grew up in Elk Creek right there in the edge of Grayson. There are some nice trails on 21 between Elk Creek and Speedwell along with some campsites along the CC Camp road. If you go across the forest service road at the top of the mountain, there are some nice camp sites up that way as well as...

    Jefferson National Forest

Never did much camping, but I grew up down around Wytheville. What areas in particular are you looking at?

    Automatic or manual transmission?

I like them both. I have "farmer's knee" as we call it in the family, and after 30 years of pushing clutches, my knee starts aching after a little while crawling around or driving in traffic with one so I'm all automatic now. It's all in what you like though! You can push start a manual...

    Has Overlanding Become Trendy?

It is what it is. I like camping and exploring. I wish I would have done more up until now but now it's what I want to do. If you want to call it overlanding, so be it. Right now, all I can afford the time and money to do is riding around the back roads near home when I get a free minute and...

    Kids and Overlanding

We have three girls. 10, 7, and 6. On road trips, we generally let them take little game tablets, but only let them play them a little at a time. We play travel games as well, license plate alphabet, and the like. When we've camped, they've kept themselves occupied playing in the woods and...
