Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

So that was an experience. I've been in some places where you get looks if you aren't a regular, but dang! The whole place almost fell silent when we walked in. I'm not so sure this is the place for us guys. I don't think one person that worked there smiled or had anything to say the whole time...

What band? NVIS only works below 5MHz IIRC.

    Scothorn Gap

I did flagpole a couple weeks ago and had a good time. Check out North River Campground and you can ride across Reddish Knob as well which isn't really challenging but has some beautiful views as well.

    Looks like a good time!

First Overlanding trip in the Suburban

Your owners manual should give you a max speed for low range but if you feel like you need 4wd you should probably be in low range, excluding highway driving in snowy or rainy conditions where the "auto" seeing you probably have comes in handy. 4hi is mainly for paved road traction when it's...

Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

Well, I've been looking around Lexington for little "home town" breakfast spots and I think I'm going to give the Lexington Restaurant a try in the morning. They have a good amount of parking and I'm going to see how much space is available inside. I'm not sure what time I'll be there but if...

This sounds like something you should start a thread for in the trip planing forum instead of tacking on the end of another member's introduction thread. :grinning:

First Overlanding trip in the Suburban

Looks like a fun trip! A coupe tips for you, letting some air out of your tires when you are off-road can soften the ride as well as improves your traction, even with street tires. The second thing is you probably should run in 4lo as going slow in 4hi causes excessive heat build up in your...

Show me a Road Sign.....really any sign...

Not a road sign but I had to make up some of these to keep people from cooking my transmitters at work. Hopefully this helps.

    Ham Radio - HF/VHF/UHF

6 and 10 are more novelty bands, neither are good for emergency coms. You'd want 40 or 20 for semi-reliable (again, depending on ionosphere) communicating. But even then, you can't guarantee you can make contact with a particular location. Your best bet is to find a net and announce that you...

Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

There's also some talk about starting a "rigs and coffee" kind of meet-up for us, something informal and not requiring all day like a monthly trip would, but let's us get together to talk shop a bit and hang out. Don't rule out an impromptu ride through the woods though! Any suggestions on...

Why Did You Build Your Rig?

I got into off-roading with a very streetable XJ Cherokee and started building a K5 Blazer to be a more serious crawler. However, after selling my XJ and buying a Crew Cab K2500 to pull the K5, I realized I missed having a decently capable daily driver than a full on trail rig that just sits at...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

I swapped in some Luyed LED reverse lights in the factory housings. I'm going to check them out here in a bit when I leave for work.

    Virginia: June 2-4

I actually rode Flagpole out on this trip and wound up down by Switzer lake. I'm wanting to run Reddish Knob and Flagpole again this fall though, so keep an eye out. It'll be a while though, busy times right now for me.

    Sleep inside or outside ?

There's a lot of factors. We have a 10 man tent for our family of 5. A camper big enough to fit us all would cost as much as my house and I'm not doing that until I convince the wife we don't need a house. :grinning: I have a hammock and tarp setup to use when I'm solo and a 4 man tent when...

Tell me about aftermarket support for your rig?

Aftermarket support wasn't a huge factor in getting a 2nd gen Xterra for me. Nissan has a good reputation and I've always like the Xterra, coupled with the facts that 1: Its less than the cost of a Toyota that's twice as old 2: Has IFS and a leaf sprung solid rear axle and 3: fits my family of...

Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

Just for interests sake, from 1-3pm on the 8th at the Sportsmans Warehouse in Roanoke, they are having a Dutch Oven cooking "class". I don't know how in-depth it will be but that could be something for us.

Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

OK everyone, in July the only weekend I have free to do much is the 8th. If anyone wants to get together speak up! If that doesn't work, ya'll can get something going another weekend. Any suggestions?
