Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
We just bought a new house a couple of years ago. I told the wife I wanted a 6000 sq ft shop with a small 3 bedroom ranch attached.
I ended up with an oversized 3 car garage.
I do a ton of solo treks. I carry a winch, a bottle jack, and a brain. I have used the winch 7 times since I got it. Never to get myself out. It is a multi-mount and sits in a receiver bolted to the floor inside out of the elements until needed, at which time it plugs in either the front or...
There are a ton of knock offs, but remember to get a tall one if you run a lifted rig. It helps. I've seen people get the regular hiLift and not be able to get a tire off the ground.
Make sure your dental insurance is paid up.
The vast majority of my trips are less than 5 days. I use a cooler. I freeze a 24 bottle case of water instead of carrying ice. It keeps the cooler a lot less messy. I pull out several every morning to carry in the cab. I drink them as they thaw. I will still have frozen bottles after 4...
I have a 40 year old Craftsman axe. It was way too soft. I edge hardened it with a torch and a bucket of oil back then and now it is hard as hell. You can't sharpen it with a file, you have to use a whetstone. 90% of how well an axe cuts has nothing to do with hard/soft. It has to do with...
I learned to fly fish at an early age. I grew up 14 miles south west of Walden, Colorado on our ranch. The Little Grizzly and Big Grizzly creeks came together on our land and formed the North Platte River. No one other than people who had lived on the land since it was homesteaded had ever...
I have a CB/Weather radio and a Ham 2m/70cm in my trailer and Jeep as well. It allows the wife and I to keep in touch if I go out exploring. I was able to relay through several repeater in Utah and a phone patch to talk all the way back to the Front Range of Colorado.
My second best field repair was on a buddies transfer case. We were in the boonies of Utah probably 75 miles from the nearest town or phone and he dropped his tcase on a rock. He punched a golf ball sized hole in the bottom.
I carry a propane torch and some AlumaWeld high zinc content...
WTF does TEOTWAWKI stand for. .... later.... Google is my friend. My rig is my bug out vehicle. I keep it fully stocked and ready to roll. You never know when an earthquake or EMP could put us back in the dark ages for a few years.
The truth is.......I'm just too old, crippled, and lazy...
I haven't formally joined any chapter. I have only been on here less than two weeks. At the moment I am between jobs so as soon as I get something nailed down, I will be paying for a membership.
As for tires, the trailer uses 15" rims the same as the Jeep, but it uses standard 5x4.5 lug pattern and they are only 31" tall. The Jeep having upgraded Dana44 axles has 5x5.5 a Ford pattern.
In the long shot that I can't plug a tire, I carry a spare wheel spacer that converts the lug pattern...
What is nice about the jacks is that I can actually lift the body to the point to where the tires actually come off the ground. That is handy for changing a tire.
Having a nice flat bed is an important. Lots of people use vertical screw jacks/jack stands. I wanted something that I didn't have to take off and store. I looked at jacks but due to the design, they had to be pretty tall. I wanted one on each corner for stability. It would have cost $800...
