    Has overlanding become elitist ?

Everybody acts like this is a new thing. As professional photographers, my wife and I have backpacked the Rocky Mountains from Mexico to Canada. The idea was to stay as close to where you wanted to take the pix at sunrise the next morning. You can count on your fingers how many times I have...

When does cost of a vehicle to build matter to you?

My wife keeps bugging me to buy a new Jeep. I keep telling her I like the one you bought me as a surprise for my birthday 24 years ago. She threatens to go write a check and get me a new one for my birthday and I keep telling her NO. I built it, I know it, I trust it. I have never had a...

    Any Ketogenic “Keto“ Overlanders?

I find that a low carb/high protein regimen helps with pain tolerance and my severe arthritis. My arthritis is so bad that I have no cartilage left in my knees and I double full knee replacement for Christmas.

Using rigs during bad weather or natural disasters

We have wind storms with speeds well above 100mph regularly in Northern Colorado. We build for the wind. The problem is the idiot that does not secure his crap or keep his trees under control and they end up hitting your house.

Using rigs during bad weather or natural disasters

In Northern Colorado, there were a group of us through NAXJA that were Red Cross Certified and carried liability insurance that volunteered during emergency events. Commonly we would provide transportation during severe snow storms for the doctors and nurses to get to and from the hospital and...

Overland and Emergency SHTF Comms? What to use?

For satellite...internet or phone, you can figure a second to get to the satellite and a second to get back to earth. Add another two seconds for the response. So with no latency in any of the other systems, you can see a 4 second response (latency) time. That is for geosynchronous orbit...

Why do you think most cowboys have mustaches. They use them to strain out the coffee grounds.

    Educate me with an adage....

I routinely wheel by myself. Sometimes my wife comes with me. If she doesn't, she always tells me... "don't do anything stupid...and remember that is my definition of stupid... not your's".

To clean the engine compartment or not? Your thoughts?

I routinely clean my Jeep XJ. The only thing I have to watch out for is the throttle position sensor. They are way to sensitive to moisture. Over on NAXJA.org I have seen dozens crap out due to water. They even have issues if you put in hood vents.

    Dealing with wasps while cooking.

WD40 is great on nests and sprays several feet with the little tube attached. It kills them virtually instantly and takes care of the larvae as well. I have problems with them building nests in the door jambs and behind the mirrors on my Jeep Cherokee. My son in law used wasp spray on them...

Anyone convert an old teardrop into something that can handle off-road conditions?

Yes, you can do a different axle. I recommend air bags for suspension and a good set of Gabriel trailer shocks. My trailer does great and handles the washboard roads as if they weren't there.

    Fire starting

I keep a squeeze bottle of Sterno fire starter jell around for when things are wet. It works great and burns long enough to dry out your kindling. Available at your local Walmart.
