  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

    Which Paper Maps are Best???

Nice maps, HOWEVER...sadly out of date. The NW India map doesn't even show the Main Delhi-Mumbai expressway!

    Which Paper Maps are Best???

Local maps such as the ones at national/provincial/territorial/state parks usually provide better local information on the park, so we get these. For an overall paper map, used in early planning, and to show people where we've been and where we plan to go, we use ITMB maps. Waterproof maps are...

    Rodents

    1) Keep the doors closed (obviously there are times when this is not feaasible, hence point #2) 2) we have mosquito netting which is keep the mosquitoes and other insects out when the tail gate or windows are open and this seems to keep rodents out as well. 3) to protect against rodents getting...

    Into the desert, overland camping.

By myself - not for many years. In one vehicle, with no other vehicles - many times on various continents.

    Desert camping is ok?

Some of our best experiences have been in deserts: clear starry skies, tranquillity, wildlife which hasn't yet learned to avoid humans, wide horizons without powerlines and windmills, no light or sound pollution. As long as you plan appropriately (water, comms, navigation, etc.) desert travel...

Looking for recommendations - Roll up kitchen utensil storage

We made one to fit what we have - cloth roll with pockets built in. Works fine.

    Ecuador Visit

You could try contacting Finca Sommerwind – Un Lugar para relajarse - it's a campsite however they do help travellers in a variety of ways, including exemption from the Police Clearance Certificate (if you are still at home I suggest you get this before leaving). They may be able to suggest...

Question: what to do if broken down and no cell service?

Good avice from others - if you avoid needing help you don't need ccomms either. However, if you want more than you can get with Inreach or Zoleo then the obvious answer is a satphone. We've used ours rarely, and half of the time it's to help others.

New to Overlanding - Awning Recommendations

We have an ARB rear awning and a Dobinson's lateral awning. Both work well.

2005 Gen 3 Montero (Pajero) Overland Build

I had a 1990 in Africa - standard and capable. We have a 2016 Montero now and it too is (was) very capable in standard form. We did do some things to it to give it more capability for some more demanding travel. Some of the modifications have proved unnecessary so I'd avoid spending money on...

    Northern Wanderings

Thanks for great photos and report. Brings back memories of our own travel through the area in 2022 , although you clearly ventured further than we did.

    Winch battery question

Good point - it had not occurred to me. My winching experience is winching others out and I haven;t had to winch myself yet : )

Looking for help on what upgrade to do next

That helps understanding. For time on sand I'd ensure that you have a compressor and air down/up as needed. We've crossed the Simpson with zero problems by using the right tyre pressures and didn't lock the transmission at all (~700 km in 5 days - 1100 dune crossings). Carrying MaxTrax gives...

    Winch battery question

As others note - you will want to have your engine running when you are winching. In terms of running out of battery - unless you are winching for several hours you will not have a problem with the standard (single) battery.

The Great Western Woodlands - Western Australia

Beautiful country! Out of interest, is the Balladonia Road still closed in Dundas?

Looking for help on what upgrade to do next

What do you plan to do with it? You could drive from Phoenix to Argentina as it is now. I can see that a RTT may be a good option, otherwise I see little need for the other two.

Now here's a real "overlander" we met this guy, with his camels, in the Central Sahara, about 200 km from the nearest town.

    Rig + Equipment

I agree - the kit is to make the travel possible, and you don;t need much. It's what's essential, and nothing more.

    Rig + Equipment

Hmm - you'll receive a wide range of opinions, all valid. Key point, I think, is to ensure that what you have suits the type of travel you undertake. Some thoughts, from my perspective: Accessories: Rough Country Bull Bar - illegal here so we have no bull bar. Adds mass and in our case we've...
