Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance August 4th and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
Hello and welcome! It’s nice to see a fellow Mid-Atlantic overlander join the forums.
As @Ethan N stated, Old Rag Mountain is a local favorite. If you plan to do the hike, please note that a day use ticket is now required from March 1-November 30. Wolf Gap Campground (GWNF) is a nice spot to...
Not a Jeeper…But I just put Falken WildPeak AT3W’s on my 4Runner a few weeks ago. I previously had Nitto Ridge Grapplers, LT285/70R17 C. Both are pretty quiet when new, but I think the Falkens seem a bit smoother on the highway. My decision to change was based on the [allegedly] better handling...
1. All of the above, I’m exploring to experience nature and history. Some ideas come from reading about a place, others from speaking with people. A chance conversation lit the spark for a two week trip to Peru, including the Inca Trail trek. Did you know that there’s a Rambo First Blood...
1. Read the vehicle reservation requirements on the NPS website. More relaxed than 2023, but still in effect.
2. The GTTSR may not be fully open, depending on the dates of your visit, the amount of spring snow and how quickly that snow and/or the Big Drift is cleared. You can monitor the Snotel...
I really appreciate all that you and Corrie have done in bringing together the overlanding community, not only in North America, but across the globe. If you’re planning to spend more time on the trail this year, have you considered meeting up with and interviewing members along the way? It...
Banff and Mt. Rainier have been added to the summer itinerary. It was a bit freaky being #10668 in the Parks Canada reservation system queue, but I scored a decent campsite. Whew!
My thought was to have a casual meet up so we can get to know one another and discuss possible excursions. I prefer to get acquainted with people before traveling and/or camping with them. Prevents bloodshed, lol.
Oh, man, you just described a week of my trip last summer. Same person got all excited when she heard I’m going to Glacier and (hopefully) the Canadian Rockies this year. Nope, nyet and never again!
I’d also like to mention that even if you travel alone, there are numerous opportunities to socialize with other travelers. I’ve met some amazing and interesting people, some have become lasting friendships.
Now that we’ve survived the holidays, is anyone interested in a Maryland (or DMV) meetup? I suggest a weekend lunch/brunch, somewhere central like Frederick or Columbia. Ideas? Suggestions? Bueller?
Mostly alone. I tend to be physically active all day, up to 10 hours on trail, scrambling uncharted routes or pausing for several hours to observe and photograph animals. I spend very little time lounging around camp, which is the preference of many travelers. When people visit, I’m fine with...
Regarding less junk food: You can also pick up individual serving sized hummus at the grocery store to pair with celery/carrots; make a batch of boiled eggs (mix salt/pepper/spices in a small Tupperware for easy dipping); pack easy to eat fruits, such as grapes; and make sandwich wraps before...
Regarding the pillows, I gotta say your wife is generally correct. Comfort equals a good night’s sleep and makes longer trips more pleasant. I’ve owned several Sea to Summit Aeros pillows; fine for backpacking, but cannot compare to a “real” pillow. To save space, make smaller pillows by cutting...
I used to make dehydrated meals for backpacking. It’s a bit more rudimentary and less costly than the sophisticated process @grubworm is using. However, i believe his will have a longer shelf life than mine, which were made for specific trips.
I made spaghetti, chili mac, fruit such as apple...
