  • Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance August 4th and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

    Plans for the New Year

I hope to convert my 2wd Sportsmobile to 4WD and add Aluminess front and rear bumpers + a winch. Then, Lord willing, my wife and I are driving to Alaska. When we get home from there, it's off to Papua, Indonesia to visit our son and his family. Busy year.

    Solar Gear Discussion

I use a 180W Zamp suitcase panel. It does a good job of charging my 2 100A batteries. However, I don't have a big electrical demand, either. My system powers several sparingly used led lights and charges electronics - iPhone, Mac and iPad.

Plates and bowls, let's overthink this together

Paper plates and bowls are tempting. I have a set of plastic plates and bowls I bought at Target. They work fine. I had flatware carved from wood until my 7 year old granddaughter was afraid of getting splinter. I went to Wal-Mart stainless.

    Easy Chili Recipe

I started out cutting up onions, peppers, etc until I actually read the ingredients in Pace Picante Sauce. This is a family favorite and easy. 1lbs lean steak (flank, round, sirloin) 1 can tomato sauce 1 can pinto beans 1 can chili beans 1 medium size jar Pace Picante (your choice mild...

    Gaia/Garmin Overlander

I use the Gaia linked to the Apple Play on my Kenwood DDx9705S with 7" screen. I've used Gaia several times and love it. The down side, however, is you have to download the maps, which can be pretty unrealistic for a long distance OTR trip. You can use the Google (or Apple) Maps on your phone...

    PhotoPills Photography App

You may already be familiar with PhotoPills app, but I just came across it and LOVE it. You download it onto your smart phone or tablet through the App Store and use it to plan photo shoots of the Milky Way, moon, or other celestial bodies based on a geographic location and calendar date. Do you...

FOR SALE AIMS Power PWRIC1500W Inverter-Charger

AIMS 1500 watt modified sine power inverter with built in charger and transfer switch. It was in my SMB when I bought it, but I switched it out last year and went with a 600W pure sinewave since I mostly use the inverter for my fridge and charging my electronics. I recently moved and can't find...

    Photography

I got the Nikon D3500 deal with extra zoom lens about a year ago. I use the 50-200 lens 90% of the time. I do landscape/wildlife photography, so will probably add a 20mm lens for macro and night photography and eventually a 600mm for long distance wildlife. That should do me until I jump up to a...

    Propane Refrigerator

If you have a good power source, I would recommend the AC/DC fridge. The issue with the propane that's a deal killer for me is they must be very level when stopped for extended time such as over night camping. That said, if you don't have a dedicated power source and are willing to level-up...

How has the Covid-19 virus affected your adventures?

I was looking forward to driving to Florida to meet my son who was going to be there from Papua to get his seaplane rating. We'd planned on some boondocking in the Ochala National Forest. Now, it's pushed out to probably October, but no worries.

What is the last thing you bought and plan to buy?

I just took delivery of my Scheel-Mann seats for my 1998 E250 and look forward to installing this week. The stock seats were murder. The next thing will probably a multi-day ice chest although I wish it was a 4x4 upgrade.

I was stuck at a Loves Truck Stop in Kansas during a tornado warning and 60 mph winds (96kmh). I had the penthouse down on my Sportsmobile, but it was fun.

    Has overlanding become elitist ?

I understand where you are coming from. When I was 17 years old, I got involved with the homebuilt aircraft scene in the early 70's when fun and basic tube and fabric airplanes were being built by the average Joe in his garage. Then came the Rutans with their foam and fiberglass construction and...

Hi, all. I'm located in Nixa, MO, sw Missouri. I've had my 1998 Ford E250 2wd Sportsmobile for a little over a year and LOVE it.
