  • Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance August 4th and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

Overland Expo East 2022 "You know what we need to do next year is...."

Here is a quick route I put together in GAIA, it is right about 100 miles long and should take approximately 8 hours with stops. It's a good mixture of pretty highways and dirt roads. It runs by Shoe Creek Trail, some overlooks on the BRP, and through Enchanted Creek trail. Nothing too...

    Overland Expo East 2021

I swear that slave cylinders wait until you are hours from home to go out. It happened on my buddy's JK twice, both times we were out on trips and hundreds of miles from home.

Overland Expo East 2022 "You know what we need to do next year is...."

Hey, I was at Expo but I did not come by and visit your camp. I ended up camping in the Overland Experience area, and had a pretty good experience. My biggest complaints is the lack of signage for classes and the floodlights that ran all night. I'm far from an expert in the area, but I do know...

    Overland Expo East 2021

I was camping in the Overland Experience area, and they really seemed to try to cram us in, I had enough room but just barely. I had maybe 8-10 feet on each side of my vehicle. Of course, I got friendly with my neighbors so it really wasn't a problem. I wish that they would let you reserve...

    Mounting items to cargo basket?

I have a cheapo Curt roof rack, and sometimes you have to get creative. I have this mount for my shovel, and then I have one of these for my hi-lift. I was able to mount an awning as well with a little creativity, and I usually just ratchet strap my recovery boards in the actual basket.

    Heading to Expo East

If your road trip includes camping, check out "The Scales" in Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in Jefferson National Forest. I'll be at Expo too, camping in the Overland Experience area.

    Outdoor cooking

I'm not a very extravagant person, but the fanciest thing I've ever cooked up was Filet Mignon, hash brown potatoes and spinach. There was a sale on filet at the grocery store we stopped at, it was like $11 a pound. I cooked it all on a cast iron skillet over a 2-burner stove. It was the best...

    Tent Security for wondering child

If you get the Gazelle (I can't recommend them enough!), you can zip tie the zippers together on one side and then sleep in front of the other side. Zip up the tent behind you when you go to the bathroom, and don't go off too far so that you can listen/watch the tent. I think those...

FOR SALE Used, but well taken care of Skottle, will be at Overland Expo East 2021 ($250)

***sold*** Hey all, I bought a Skottle approximately one year ago and I think I've decided to go a different route with my camp kitchen setup. I do mostly solo or small group camping and honestly the Skottle works best when cooking for big groups. I've always taken really good care of it, it's...

    Sharing locations

If you are like me and the nearest national park that allows remote camping is 10 hours away, you can also check out National Forests. Using a service like Gaia or Caltopo, you can use the forest service map and the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) overlay. This shows you where you are allowed to...

    Sharing locations

Without naming it, is this remote beach camping on an island in North Carolina run by the National Park Service? If not could you drop some hints? I only know of that one place for legal drive-on beach camping on the East Coast.

    Sharing locations

This is definitely something that I think about. Unless I know someone, I don't share any trails or campsites that someone couldn't find with just a quick google search. This might just be something I noticed, and perhaps it's an East Coast (U.S.) thing because our trails often aren't quite as...

    East Coast N/S routing.

I can't comment any on the MABDR, but I can recommend two good dispersed campsites that appear to be near your route. 1. 37.79222, -79.12929, there are several sites near here, along FR63. It's very pretty, and right along the Piney River. 2. 36.66970, -81.48699, this is a large site called "the...

    Prioritizing Recovery Gear

Totally depends on where you are going and who you are going with. If you are by yourself and are planning to do anything more than a well traveled dirt backroad, a winch is a good thing to have (you don't need an electric one though, you can use a hand winch or a hi-lift jack with the recovery...

US East North Maine Woods - Ghost Trains

I've never been to Maine but that looks like a lovely trip. So some of Maine's woods are managed by a private company that operates checkpoints?

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

I just submitted my paperwork for my Utah CFP so I can CC in the states I normally camp in (Virginia and West Virginia). Of course, Maryland (home) doesn't honor this, so I'll have to transport out of the state unloaded and secured. I'm going to carry a Glock 29 loaded with 10mm Buffalo Bore 220...

    Ask About Gaia GPS!

80 seems to be a paved state highway. I'm going to recommend that when you are looking in a National Forest to use the the USFS 2016 map and MVUM (USFS) layer. Nat Geo is good for finding stuff, but in Virginia especially you really need to use the MVUM layer to get the open/close dates. Lots

US East Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Parkway

It is one of my favorite spots. The Appalachian trail and several other smaller trails run through it, so its a great spot to set up camp and go for a nice day hike. There are also several good dispersed sites along the Piney River (around 37.79525, -79.13536).

US East Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Parkway

And if you want to dispersed camp, I can highly recommend "The Scales" (36.66970, -81.48699) in the Virginia Highlands. There's a short rough road up to the top, and then there is a great camping area with a toilet building and wild horses nearby.

US East Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Parkway

If you are ok with getting off the parkway for a little bit, you can drive some Forest Roads and get to a fantastic overlook near a radio tower. The coordinates are 37.79547, -79.18055, you have to park and follow a short trail behind the fences to get to the lookout. It's absolutely stunning...
