  • Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance August 4th and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

    Retired my jumper cables

Note that I said, when you have a jump box. If they used the same reasoning, they'd have a jump box lol. Personally, I do carry jumper cables when solo, but I don't have a jump box yet.

Horror Stories and getting in over your head on the Trail.

Fortunately, I don't have any stories to add to this excellent thread, although there are a few times when I definitely could have had one but avoided it by following the old adage, "Discretion is the better part of valour." From my life experience, including time in the military and law...

    Retired my jumper cables

Doesn't have to be either/or. If you're wheeling alone, there's little point in carrying jumpers when you have a jump box. If you're with a group, however, one person can carry cables, someone else can have a jump box, etc. Spread the gear between the group and everyone benefits without...

    Sweet. Can't wait!

    2012 Nissan Juke AWD/CVT

This is a sweet rig. Driving, as I do, the grandaddy of all crossovers, I have a soft spot for your Juke. Can't wait to see what else you'll do. Winch? Skid plate? Roof rack? Jerry cans? Oooooo rear tire mount....awww yiss. Keep up the good work!

    Oddball overlanding rigs!

Got a build thread? I'd love to follow the progress.

    Oddball overlanding rigs!

I've actually been eyeballing the Juke for a while and thinking it might make a wicked off roader. Love this build! 16 inch wheels?

    propane tanks

5lbs are a bit pricey, but I bought one a while ago and I absolutely LOVE it. It's lasted for a 5 day expedition, plus numerous back yard bbqs, so plenty of propane in them. Way better for the environment than the horrid 1lb bottles, and IMO the 5lb is the perfect size for overlanding, camping...

    Xterra or Landrover? 1st Rig

Landrover: Making owners into mechanics for over sixty years Personally, I would steer well clear of land rovers. Nissan is a far better choice. However, there was a period where Xterras were made with a serious defect in the transmission. Steer clear of 2005-2010 models of Xterra, as they...

Where to overland and camp in the Southeast

There's a guy named Trip Smith on youtube who is in Florida. He's mostly into stand up paddle boards and kayaks, but he does a lot of dispersed camping, so might be a useful resource for you.

    GVWR?

Interesting discussion. All of these factors, combined with the nature of my rig, are reasons why I continually opt for the lightest gear I can reasonably use. I'm intrigued by the question of tires factoring in to the GVRW. On the one hand, they do affect the braking, however they are unsprung...

To Chainsaw or not to Chainsaw, that is the question

100% agree. This goes with leaving it better than you found it. By all means clear out the tracks and fsr's, but don't go cutting trees that don't need to be cut. There's a local 4wd club that has the management of several rec sites, so they often cut danger trees that are standing dead, but...

Expedition to Kitsault and Alice Arm

The following day, we set up the boat and prepared to head to Alice Arm. Launching proved more difficult than we expected, as we had to carry the boat over quite the piles of slippery rocks to get to the shore, as there wasn't an easier launch spot. Eventually after much difficulty we got the...

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

I would probably choose a lever action in 44mag or maybe 357 mag as my bush gun, except that they tend to be very pricey here, and I already have a 12 gauge shotgun with a fairly handy 18 inch barrel. I totally agree with the points raised in favour of them, though.

    Come-along or winch?

I had what I think is a pretty wicked idea on how to add a winch to my V, and I credit this thread for getting me really thinking hard about it. I'm going to do my new coilovers and lift first, but as soon as I can after that, I'm going to try to get the winch put on.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Corrected the upward swoop that my roof rack originally had. It occurred to me that instead of redoing the foot with 3/4 instead of 1" aluminum tubing, I could just drill new holes for the side bracket. It now has an ever so slight downward bow, but way more level than it was before. I'm happy...

    Come-along or winch?

This thought occurred to me fairly early on. It is most certainly worth keeping in mind if one is about to deploy a come along for recovery. The curb weight on an RD1 CR-V is just over 3000lbs, the GVRW is just below 4000lbs I believe, so if I had an 8000lb come along, it should be rated for...

    Come-along or winch?

I do have some folding traction boards, and we did actually use them to get my buddy in his Taco unstuck when we were snow wheeling, but I do plan to invest in some maxtraxx style traction boards sometime in the near future. The $99 ones from Amazon seem to get good reviews, so I'll probably buy...

    Come-along or winch?

In answer to the last two posts, my CR-V is Realtime 4wd. Basically it's a similar arrangement to the full time 4wd system, except it's FWD until it encounters a 3% or greater difference between the front and rear wheels rotational speed, at which point it hydraulically engages a clutch pack in...
