Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance August 4th and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
Not sold on that quite yet. I can justify HAM though. I guess if I was a backcountry hiker Sat's could be justified, yet I have a vehicle and HAM brings more to the table or so I've read.
I do appreciate the input! Learned a bit!
Interesting! He called out and EMS came in.. Since I stayed at the scene, I didn't have the chance to ask him.. I assumed he a NF emergency frequency (2 way). Cell had no chance for miles.. I'll ask next time in the area. Now I'm very curious!
I was too busy where I was to think of anything...
I have debated how to go about this and up till the last run, haven't been out of cell service when we've come upon another requiring assistance. This time we were in a valley an he was off the trail and bleeding. This is when I really wish I had something with more power and able to broadcast...
We use a cassette toilet. Now, basic rule is no poo directly in it or you dump it! Man, they are nasty to dump with poo in there..
Pee is fine and mostly wifey's toilet. Poo we wag bag. So far those plastic grocery bags with a couple cups of cat litter does the trick. If we're backcountry for...
I'm using the Nat Geo layer and researching George Washington NF. I see the symbol for a gate but there's two different colors of them... Black/brown.. What's the difference?
I have driven through the Shenandoah Valley a few times now and say each time I really need to come back just for here! Next month is that time! I'll be coming in from the north and will overnight once in PA before starting the run. We're going to take our sweet time driving through and around...
If you put Glacier over Yellowstone, you must have had a terrible experience there! It's been many years since we've been to Yellowstone, yet if you hang around the Lodge.. Ya it gets crazy busy! We did a bunch of back-country hikes and found it most enjoyable. If you're lucky enough to meet...
Curious.. What are your running for a controller? I run a DC/DC charger that's settable for different batteries (mine being lithium). Again assuming this about running a house battery, not just a second truck battery..
Well, TC said it before I got here, so that's good! You should at least pickup a free version of a gps mapping software. I like Gaia, yet they're getting pricey now (since they were bought out), but any good software showing routes. My goal when we return is to travel through on dirt as it is...
I will second Tundracamper! We spent a month in Utah and still feel we skimmed through! I plan to return and spend a month just working around Canyonlands NP! It's hard to slow it down and take on less distance, yet the return is you see so much more! Utah's Big 5 is just the beginning of what's...
Several in fact! It's tough to connect them without touching pavement for any distance.. That's my challenge in Southeastern NH! Tell ya though, some of the tarred roads I've travel should be ripped up and returned to dirt!!
I have built a couple routes north out of Auburn NH. I do keep going back out and looking at new and more interesting ways of getting north. Current endeavor is working the first leg out of my little town and improve it a bit. I've chosen to go the RT16 corridor north though I still barely...
Also sorry to hear this. I do like Gaia, but not at higher pricing! I'll be debating a switch when the time comes if they haven't brought the 5yr plan/pricing back.
Now you have 'a taste' of what's out that way! I have plans, once Canada opens again, to run up the Rockies CO to Jasper in a slow drive. There's many areas we've yet to see all there. It could be an awesome late summer/early fall run. Some much you can do out that way!
