I think you're talking about 4Runners, but I believe this applies to Tacomas and Tundras too;
All of the various trims are well thought out and are good models worth buying. Each trim is also available in standard and Premium. Premium gets the nicer interior, stereo and exterior lights and turn...
As fantastic as Lake Alpine (up Hwy 4) and Pinecrest Lake (up Hwy 108) are, these kind of locations are going to be absolutely mobbed with people on big holiday weekends. : (
The CA backroads and 4x4 trails book is a good resource, just keep in mind there's a wide rage of trail difficulty...
You're going to have a great time. Bartlett Springs Road is pretty wide and 'smooth' for a forestry road. Mendocino National Forest is huge and Bartlett Springs Road skirts along the southern edges. There aren't a ton of places to explore compared to areas to the north, and there aren't many...
No worries, I didn’t think I was going to be able to make it anyway. It’s just good to be in the woods. While I was there I realized how exposed the ridge would be to wind so I’m not surprised how it turned out for you. Were you in tents or your vehicles before you gave up?
I saw one spot that...
I cruised up to Pinnacle Rock Saturday morning but didn't see anyone around there. But what a beautiful day! I took 303 up from the lake, explored the ridge, then went out Bartlett Springs Road to Bear Valley Road. I almost went up to Letts Lake to meet up with some friends but ran out of time.
Its going to wet and cold for sure, but I have a hard time saying any weather in the woods "sucks". You just need to be aware and prepared for the conditions. I actually prefer MNF in the winter. I love the rain, slushy mud and snow- and there's also a lot fewer people.
(it can be a real...
I'm curious what the new Rangers will be like too. I remember seeing some nice ones in Russia about 6 years ago. I thought to myself I wouldn't be opposed to a Ford if they were like that.
For nostalgia, and showing that the old Rangers aren't complete crap, I want to share the B-Roll...
...except on the north facing slopes, where will stick around longer.
I'm surprised how close that Pinnacle camping spot is to Clear Lake, I thought it was farther north.
So sorry to hear about your dad. About eight years ago my mother was also diagnosed. My parents were forced to move back from Vancouver Island to central California as my dad began to simplify their lives. Thinking similarly to you, my dad planned our last family vacation (even though we're all...
Gold Lake should be totally doable by July.
The straight forward way to the 4x4 campground is by the 4x4 trail from the regular Gold Lake campground at the other side of the lake. Last fall we took the back route from Packer Lake via Deer Lake. Its bumpier in some places but it sure was a good...
Hard to say how long but I think that’s a reasonable estimate.
Your original route on FH -7 is the most direct route and should be the fastest if snow isn’t blocking the road. Maybe only 3 or 4 hours? You should call the main office in Willows to ask if the Mendocino Pass is open.
FH-7 does connect Willows to Covello (pretty round valley but the town is a rural ghetto), but a large portion of this is high altitude and is notorious for holding snow. I took this route in early December and while there was snow, it didn't stop us.
At this time of year, I might consider...
