Awasome! I'm glad you are rolling. I almost passed by you last September on a 9000 mile trip across 26 states. Maybe next time. Our 80 is mature, and now I'm into building a troopy. If you ever make it to the west coast, LMK!
Cheers mate. You are a true magician.
Axles from the 79 series are taken to Valley Hybrids for full rebuild and E-lockers. They will convert from 5 lugs to 6 lugs using 80 series parts. The reason for using the 79 is the coil springs in the front and full floating axle in the back.
I've also been working on installing 80 series...
Got the calipers all cleaned up and powder coated. Rebuild them with new OEM kit. Dash has been powder coated and the body being worked on at the body shop.
Stu hi,
The downpipes is after the turbo. ideally you want to monitor pre-turbo. I drilled and tapped the exhaust manifold right above the turbo on all 3 engines that we used. Some put it on the bottom part of the exhaust in front of cylinder #6.
Also, if you mess with the exhaust, always...
Hey Stu,
highly recommend an intercooler. The DT are known for cracking the exhaust manifold. You can buy all the parts on eBay. Critical part is the intake adopter. If interested, I can send you the links to all.
cheers mate.
Got all the OEM brackets tack welded on the frame for the front coils. Measured it 50 times on the HDJ79 frame and one more to be sure to locate them. The HJ75 and HDJ79 frame rails are identical in shape, length and spacing. Only the brackets/gussets are different.
The drivetrain seems antsy...
Productive morning. I’m at point of no return. The brackets for the leaf springs are cut off the frame. Still need to grind and smooth the weld marks. Once it’s done, I’ll clean the spots on the frame for the new brackets for the coil springs and tack weld them. The location I can measure from...
Today I got the steering box from Red Head Steering. These guys are just phenomenal. They inspect and rebuild it better then specs. It came out of the 79 which is similar to the 105. Note the difference in the size of the arm. The original one (on the right) was not power steering, so I'll have...
You are absolutely right. I bought a 1988 troopy that was ‘raped’ in a farm in Nicaragua for almost 30 years. I always wanted a troopy, so whatever it takes. I figured to build it to my likings. I have a year to go and a few $10k but when done it will be worth the effort (I think).
There is a guy (Eric) in Grand Junction,CO that builds aluminum popup roofs for Landcruisers. The place is called Campteq. You can check him on Instagram. The unit for a landcruiser is about $10k and it’s built to perfection. I’m not sure if he will take the job but it’s worth asking if you...
That looks great. Are you posting you build somewhere?
I’m building currently from the ground up a custom Landcruiser 75 troopy. Landcruiser 79 pickup suspension and axles including conversion to coils in the front, 80 series diesel drivetrain, AluCab popup roof and much more. I’m planning...
Dropped the axles with my good friend Georg. I consider his shop Valley Hybrids in Stockton, the holiest site in the central valley, CA for diesel Landcruiser. The axles did fit in the back of our diesel 60 and since on Friday I'm towing my son's 1978 FJ40 to Oregon, we rented a trailed and I...
Hey Patric,
is the tank hard shell? How are you pulling the water out?
page 1 and 4 of the blog has details and links to all components including the thermostat. The sensor itself has an extension wire and is attached to the copper pipe the comes out of the tank into the heat exchange as...
That is what I did. It works perfectly except you have to move the knob to red (hot) in order for it to work. On hot days I just open the window.
I had issues getting the 12.5 gallons to 140F last December when drove to Seattle in the big storm. It was 21F outside and with the wind factor...
