Continue building my Honda Element or find a Tacoma or 4Runner?

I'm sure there will be some downhills as well as some uphills. Haha! I'm thinking the perfect maiden voyage for this FJ would be my Element's maiden voyage that we were unable to complete, that put the idea into my head that perhaps I'd already outgrown the Element. :D

    Welp. I did it. 2008 FJ w/ 183k miles.

Continue building my Honda Element or find a Tacoma or 4Runner?

Thank you, everyone. Looked at quite a few vehicles today and found an FJ that’s been very well taken care of, 183k miles, has lots of maintenance records, alternator replaced 40k miles ago, doesn’t look to have been off-road at all, is bone stock, and has everything I wanted except the rear...

Lockers might be difficult to check. Tips? I actually can’t find anything about how to test A-TRAC either, except by lifting the vehicle in a shop haha

Continue building my Honda Element or find a Tacoma or 4Runner?

And just stumbled upon a 2011 Pro-4X with 170k miles for $11,400. Alright, y'all got me reconsidering. It's quite possible to get a rig that's more capable than my Element for less than I could sell my Element for (the Xterra), or I go with Toyota's known reliability (albeit inflated Toyota...

Continue building my Honda Element or find a Tacoma or 4Runner?

    I'm eyeballing a few, including: $7,000 - X trim - 2012, 134k, dealership $8,000 - X trim - 2008, 154k, dealership $8,000 - Off-Road trim - 2006, 164k, small dent in side, well maintained (records), private party Interestingly, the 2008 and 2012 are at the same dealership. I'm having...

Continue building my Honda Element or find a Tacoma or 4Runner?

Thanks, everyone. @DintDobbs - I do indeed enjoy how easy my Element is to park, due to its wheelbase. @tjZ06 - That's good to know. I've always liked the Xterra, but I don't know much about features to look for. I do see there are fairly decent deals on them locally, though.

Continue building my Honda Element or find a Tacoma or 4Runner?

Thank you all. I edited my original post for more clarity (hopefully). I’ll be honest - I haven’t considered Nissan or Jeep or Land Rover, as I haven’t heard many great things about their reliability, and I don’t know the manufacturers as well as I do Honda and Toyota.

Continue building my Honda Element or find a Tacoma or 4Runner?

Hey y'all. Amateur overlander here. I just purchased a RTT for my Honda Element, and I'm budgeting for a roof rack now. Roof racks for mounting a RTT for the Element are $1,100, about $200 more than a Prinsu. This got me thinking... What else is the same cost or more for Toyotas - proven...

    Let's talk batteries.

I need to figure out what to do with my previous battery that's still good. Hah! Any ideas? I really think the most I would ever run is a fridge, but that's so far into the future that it may not even happen.

    Let's talk batteries.

Really enjoying the conversation here. Last night, I replaced my battery in an attempt to fix an issue with my vehicle not starting. I was stuck after picking up two six packs (worse could happen). I discovered that it was just a connection issue - my positive terminal's connector requires a...

    Let's talk batteries.

Thanks! I have read that story about Optima, and I did originally start looking at Odyssey. Maybe I'll just go back to them. Optima has a lot of sizes though. But I think I found one that'll work in mine. I have a 35 group right now, and I think the 34 group Odyssey would fit perfectly. I...

    Let's talk batteries.

Oh! I thought on Lithium Ion batteries had this issue. Could you direct me to some weeds to get into? I was really considering an AGM. There is one AGM that I know works with a factory setup, but I don't know if it would be good for what I want to setup.

Fantastic explanation, and I think I agree with your opinion of leaving the system as stock as possible. Do you have a link for that site? I found his business site and the forum, but no calculator.

    Let's talk batteries.

I kept my engine running while inflating during my first trip out. Wasn’t sure if that’s normal or not, but I knew my battery couldn’t handle it without the engine running. Is that normal? So it sounds like you’re saying that since most items are charged or operated while the vehicle is on...

    Let's talk batteries.

So then my follow-up inquiry would be: - Is a Yellowtop worth it or just get a strong Redtop? - If a Redtop is enough, why not just another brand AGM? I would think if I do end up getting a fridge and lights, I would want to figure out a second power setup for those. For the vehicle itself, I...

    Let's talk batteries.

I am on the hunt for a battery that can handle at least some load when the vehicle is off. I have a dash cam with parking mode that killed my current Walmart battery (it was a temporary anyways while I build my rig). That battery fails to start every now and then, and is just so sluggish to...

2005 Honda Element EX AWD - "Henry Honk"

We took Henry out to Snoqualmie National Forest yesterday - technically Clearwater Wilderness. Our first attempt was FS-75 to Lonesome Lake, but halfway up, I decided it was too deep for Henry, so I back out. We tried a few more spots but they were all closed. Our last ditch effort was to hit up...

Land Rover LR4 sleeping platform cabinets build.

This looks great! What sort of carpet is that and how did you install it? I've never done anything like this, but trying to carpet my sleeping platform as well. I figure I'll need a staple gun and some kind of automotive or acoustic carpet.
