CA West Canada Conquering the Dempster Highway: Road Trip to Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, Canada

Made it up to Tuktoyaktuk in 2019. Left Vancouver, WA July 21 and was gone for 3 weeks. It was a great trip. I hope to get back up there with my son and his family as soon as this lockdown is over. Have a great time and leave yourself time to stop and enjoy some of the other sights along the way.

Hi Everyone! New advice for a Newbie with a Subie?

I have a 2017 Outback with a CVT RTT, it weighs 125 lbs. I was told by CVT they did not recommend their tent be used on the crossbars. Dynamic load with wind during driving conditions can overload the crossbars. I looked and found that Front Runner made a rack for mine that bolted where the...

An overwhelmed newbie from New Jersey

Yes the 7,500 mile trip I took was accomplished in 21 days. It was planned for 60 days but circumstances of my traveling companion forced it to be condensed and remove several places I wished to visit. I did not feel rushed on any days of the trip except for one long drive day returning from...

An overwhelmed newbie from New Jersey

The Demster is a great adventure. Did a 7,500 mile trip from Vancouver, WA up to Tuktoyaktuk in 2019 with 2 Subaru Outbacks. Just make sure you have a full size spare to carry. Beautiful scenery and plenty of camping, campgrounds and primitive, along the way. I was 64 when I made the trip and...

    Overland Subaru Tool Kits

Not at this time. So far I haven't had to wrench very much on my vehicle out in the wild. The Outback has been really solid. Specific wrenches I've used are more for the modificatiopns I have made to the car.

    Overland Subaru Tool Kits

Mine has been on a 3-week, 7,500 mile, trip to the Arctic Ocean up the Dempster Highway. What are you using to mapping your journey and navigating your route?

Paid version of Gaia GPS. It has been good to me, leading me up in Canada and across the western US. I use the route I planned before hand and follow my route on the screen to get to my destinations. Downloading maps as needed so I do not need cell service.

Even during the last days of July I was wearing a sweatshirt in Tuk. I was not cold but I was comfortable.

    Yukon and Alaska

From other travelers report’s, I think I just got lucky with the good weather. Where I found all the mosquitoe, a friend was camped there overnight and said it poured. I was about 1 1/2 hour south of him and only got a light sprinkling. LUCKY.

    Yukon and Alaska

My trip was started on July 21, 2019. Crowds weren't bad, never had a problem getting a camp spot, I was lucky with mosquito's as only had one stop were they were annoying, long hours of daylight and out of 21 days had only 2 with rain. I planned for the worse but was fortunate to get a...
