It's not overlanding, but the Camel Trophy is probably my biggest inspiration, AND favorite videos to watch:)
I have a 2nd edition of the Vehicle-Dependent Expedition Guide and it is part of my top list. There's also Four By Four Driving by Tom Sheppard and The New Zealand 4 Wheel Drive...
Know when to back out.
I was on a trail at Hollister Hills SVRA that had not been used or maintained in a while. The further in I got, the more overgrown the surrounding trees became. I get to a point where there was a switch back and I decided to make a turn around at that point because...
I also got a camp chair at the same time for $1.99 that tuned out to be one of my favorite chairs. The end of the arm rest was worn through a little from the pole behind it, so I just used a large safety pin and it worked great for many years.
Like recoveries, spotting is done on a case by case basis. In my experience though, the less talking the better. I've had multiple people yelling what they think the driver should do all at the same time. The driver doesn't know who to listen to if everyone voices their opinion. That's probably...
For the most part I don't talk unless it's a one on one with the driver. Hand signals should be all that's needed after you go over the line with the driver.
Depends more on your area, but I found a complete REI Half Dome 2 person tent at the Goodwill for $2.99! Ground sheet, rainfly, stakes and even the little loft were all in the bag.
I've stopped using Driver and Passenger as well to denote which way to turn. There are too many times I've had a RHD vehicle in the group, and that gets confusing for all parties involved.
Technically, yes you could crimp the terminal ends on the wire. But to do it the proper way, what you need are 2 male bullet connectors and crimp them onto the bare wires of the CB. Then you can just plug them into the cig adapter and wrap each wire with electrical tape around the connector. If...
I have their 5 gallon water can and dual Jerry can mount. The plastic nozzle for the jug was near impossible to use. A friend gave me the jug because the first time he used it, the nozzle pulled out of the can (because of the resistance) and he lost about half the water. I've talked with some...
10 years ago I started with a CB as it is very easy and cheap to get started with. Over the years HAM became more popular with NCLR Club and I made the switch before a trip to Death Valley. At that point the CB antenna was only used as a flag pole for sand dunes. I had to blow the dust off the...
Yesterday I got to use my rig and gear to co-teach a Tread Lightly! Tread Trainer class. It was held in Guerneville, CA at the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve and sponsored by the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods. Bill Nay (aka Father Nayture) is the go to Master Tread Trainer for...
I looked up that line on Amazon. Seems like the Dyneema is 1/2" and then the jacket goes over it making it even thicker(?). The picture does say "Warning this rope is huge".
Usually you want the line to birdcage, where you push it together with both hands and you can inspect the inside of the...
