What's your MPG (fuel economy) on the road.

Cool, you can carry all of my gear for me! LoL!!!

What's your MPG (fuel economy) on the road.

No re-gearing options with the speedo and odo in my truck, so re-gearing the diffs when going up in tire size is the only option. Even then, there is still a bit of a difference between actual and displayed speeds. It's a bum deal because with my 4xFar Adventures business, I don't get to report...

    Possible Rubicon Trip

Agree that 5-6 days is a looong time for the Rubicon. I've gone as a passenger twice. My truck wasn't built enough back then, and now I need it to drive 45 miles a day for work. It's my only vehicle. The "easy" version of the trail is right after the Jamborees. But usually a few weeks after...

What's your MPG (fuel economy) on the road.

2001 LR Discovery 2, 4" lift, 33" tires, loaded with bumpers, guards, steel wheels, winch, roof rack, etc. Diffs have been re-geared to 4.14. I'm hovering around 10 MPG. My odo never reaches 200 miles before refueling, and typically it will swallow 20 gallons.

    How To Plug a Tire

Here's another excerpt from my training manual, this time on plugging a tire. The demo kit below is the UTP Tire Repair Kit, available at winchline.com. For an overview of the pieces in kit, checkout my YouTube video at the bottom of their page. Stuck with thorns, pinched by rocks, or driven...

    New to everything

Anyone who is new to overlanding, and has a decently capable rig shouldn't worry too much about throwing $$$ at it right away. It's more capable than you know, and will do things you thought not possible. Now that's not to say you should go out and find the biggest rock garden you can and get...

    FCC Part 97

I used the study guide @Chris Arnesen mentioned. It's written in such a way that the answers and questions lend themselves to each other and it works very well. I studied that over a long weekend years ago and it started to make sense of everything. Couple that with one of the practice apps on...

Brand new to overlanding in general-2003 suburban

Never go out alone, and leave a trip plan with someone, even for a day trip. Check out forums specific to your vehicle. Learn it's strengths and weaknesses. Carry spares and tools to replace some of the simpler stuff. Solid, frame mounted recovery points. Don't rely on the factory tie downs...

    Pretrip inspection

I've been working on a training manual for a while now and this is the checklist I have. Some of these things are checked just from daily driving, like the horn and turn signals. Others may not need to be checked for every trip, but it's good to know when it was last checked, like the ATF. Pre...

    Roof Rack: Steel or Aluminum?

Yeah, while the trucks used in the Camel Trophy were in mostly stock form, the addition of the rollcage was the biggest mod done at Solihull. The D1's were also given the "Camel Cut" on the bottom of the rear fender. Everything got HD springs. But the drivetrain was all stock, open diffs and all.

    Favorite Trail Meals

For the most part with a fridge or good cooler, you can take just about anything. It's really up to you to decide what you want to deal with on the trail. Personally, I try to avoid taking raw meat except for steak. There's usually not a lot of blood in the packaging (I'll stick it in a ziplock...

    Roof Rack: Steel or Aluminum?

I also have an SD rack on my D2 and would opt for steel if I were making my own rack. Roof racks are designed for a vertical load, not a side load, and I would not recommend using one as a recovery point. Those CT trucks had the roof rack attached to the roll cage, which was welded to the...

Broken leg, what to watch on YouTube/Amazon/Netflix

Yeah finished the GT in the first week:) Archer is a great idea, it's been a while since I've watched an episode. Here's a funny story related to the show. A couple years ago, around Thanksgiving, I came home and found a discarded shoulder bag on the street in front of my house. Sadly, it...
