    Solo Overlanding

There's a key in this statement. There's no shame in scouting the trail, finding an alternate route, or turning back. Don't exceed you personal (driver, hiker, medic, etc.) capabilities, and don't exceed your vehicle's capabilities, and you'll have a great trip.

First time visiting MOAB - Help!

If you're up to it, the White Rim Trail - starting or ending at Shaffer Switchbacks and ending or starting at Mineral Bottom - is a really good and scenic trail. It'll challenge your truck, but you'll both make it fine. There are incredible views of both the Green and Colorado Rivers. You...

Do I really need to bring extra gas?

Gas stations in these small Western towns can be weird. Some close seasonally, some close early, some are closed down, and some are just GONE. I drove the Pony Express Trail expecting to find gas in Ibapah - a reservation town - and was surprised that I didn't even see a trace of a gas station...

Pre-Trip Maintenance and Tool Kit Reminder...

My nephew asked me to drive his support vehicle on his one-day, 100-mile mountain bike ride of the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands, Utah. I checked all my bolts, fluids, tires, etc., and we headed down a couple of weeks ago. 18 miles into the drive I came across a Jeep JL Unlimited stopped in...

    Downhill driving help!

I find that starting a steep descent in 4-Lo, 1st gear works well for me. Slow and low; that is the tempo.

What is the last thing you bought and plan to buy?

I ordered up some D-Boxes and Crossboxes for my Decked Drawer system.

    Before you Buy Rooftop Tent

I’m definitely a weekend warrior, fully employed, happily married, with kids still at home. I have a small, (relatively) inexpensive RTT that spends a lot of time hanging in my garage. Like a ground tent, or a camping trailer, it has its drawbacks. And it has places where it really shines...

    Western expedition in a 2wd

Yup. And it can get pretty hot, too!

    Western expedition in a 2wd

You’ll be able to see everything you could want to see in Utah - Arches, Zion, Capitol Reef, etc. in a 2WD Tacoma. Much of Canyonlands will be out of reach to you, with the exception of Island in The Sky. You can easily do the Schaffer Switchbacks in your truck, too. If you get into the Uinta...

US Southwest Utah Backcountry Discovery Route (UTBDR)...

Not yet. I’d like to in 2022. I’m thinking of doing I-80 to Idaho this coming summer, and the middle section in 2023.

What do you think are really good tires for most off road ventures

I've run Hankook Dynapros for years and have loved them. I ran them on my 2008 JKU for years, and put them on my Tacoma as soon as the dealer's tires wore out. 60,000 miles has not been unusual in my experience. Great tires.

Looking for 500 MI poney express trail

I drove the route from 5-Mile Pass, south of Salt Lake City to Lake Tahoe earlier this month. The route is intact until you hit Nevada Hwy 287, then you're into a lot of private land. I'm going to try to attach the track I took. It was awesome, even if it wasn't completely on dirt. GPX viewer

Very primitive and dry. If you take the road out to Mexican Hat Rock you’ll find plenty of space for 5 rigs, though.

    Need help choosing tires

I have 35,000 miles on my Hankook DynaPro M/Ts and they still have a TON of tread left. I had the same tire on my 2008 JK Unlimited and got 60,000 miles on them before I sold it with plenty of tread. I know a lot of it is driving style, but the tires seem to be built to last. Quiet(er) on the...

    PINCH POINTS!!

This is an excellent write up. I see many Jeeps with their doors off and drivers dangling a foot out. I've even seen them with foot pegs. Those rigs are heavy and getting your foot between the Jeep side and a rock or tree will result in serious injury. The softest thing (flesh and bone) in...

    Preventing Motor Vehicle Incidents

Another good rule relates to overcoming our ego: Do not be so determined to go forward that you won't let yourself consider turning around. When that little voice in your head tells you to stop, then stop. When you think you *might* be able to make it, then really scout it out and consider...

    Timbren Axleless Suspension

One of the guys on my recent Utah Backcountry Discovery Route trip pulled a rented trailer on Timbren suspension behind his 2017 Tacoma, and it was great. The trailer did a great job of staying level and pulling smoothly. Of course, without the axle he cleared everything on the trail easily...

9 July 2020: Leave Salt Lake City, drive to Mexican Hat, UT. Camp between the San Juan River and Mexican Hat Rock. All paved highway until the Mexican Hat Rock turnoff, then easy dirt road to camp sites. 10 July 2020: Depart Mexican Hat, UT about 10am and drive through Valley of The Gods...
