    Deer Valley/Strawberry Canyon 7/31-8/2

7N93 starts at the end of the "Round Valley Sno-Park" parking lot, which is on the road heading to Bear Valley ski resort. I haven't been up there in years, but remember it as an out-and-back road that went up on a ridge with good views. Interestingly, if you follow the road to the end on Google...

    Deer Valley/Strawberry Canyon 7/31-8/2

There are several relatively easy trails close to Corral Hollow. Here are a few that come to mind: Mattley Ridge Calaveras Dome Black Springs Route 7N93 (not sure of the name) Highland Lakes Sourgrass (up until the river crossing)

US West July 17-19th, 2020 Bodie Ghost Town and Copper Mountain—CA

It is definitely difficult to find the fissures when leaving from the marked parking lot, I think we had 25% of our group turned around and headed back. It looks like there is a dirt road on the west side of Black Point that gets you much closer to the top, but I have not personally explored it.

US West July 17-19th, 2020 Bodie Ghost Town and Copper Mountain—CA

You are probably already aware of this, but if you are going to head towards Aurora you could continue on to Masonic ghost town and the Chemung Mine and wind up on 182 north of Bridgeport. It's a nice drive. There's not a lot left at Masonic, but the ruins at Chemung are interesting to explore...

    Plano box kitchen and inventory

I used both Plano boxes on a camping trip last weekend and they worked great. In particular I really like being able to pull the tray out of the kitchen box, turn it 90 degrees, and rest it on the box while I get something out of the bottom. This keeps the tray off the ground and avoids getting...

    Slick Rock (Lake Alpine, CA)

In the "old days" before the lake Alpine side was rerouted I always found the trail easier to run from South to North. That direction has you going downhill on the main obstacle a mile or two in. That said, I have yet to drive all of the rerouted section and that might in fact be easier North to...

Coincidentally I started with cardboard as well. CAD - Cardboard aided design. :)

    Minimum Ground Clearance?

Breakover angle might be a better metric to think about than ground clearance. A vehicle with a longer wheelbase will need more clearance under the belly (not necesssarily the lowest spot) to have the equivalent breakover angle of a shorter vehicle.

    Trail Rating Numbers?

As others have mentioned the numeric trail ratings are not standardized and vary based on who is "scoring" the trail. Also, a trail's difficulty can change over time due to erosion from the weather and/or vehicles so if it was rated a "5" 10 years ago that rating may no longer be appropriate...

    What do we really need?

If you really want to be able to call yourself an overlander you need all the things. Roof top tent, scottle, Maxtrax, forky murder shovel, Scandinavian axe, Icon Stage 11 suspension, etc. :) Seriously though, if you want to go offroading and camping I think you just need 4 things: 1. Common...

    Plano box kitchen and inventory

I've thought of it and have drawn up multiple plans, but to date I haven't come up with a design I like. The main problems are minimizing weight and figuring out how it would work with a table (or as a table). I have a folding aluminum kitchen table that is 15+ years and old works really well...

Kenwood VX-71 install in a 2nd gen Tacoma

It's part of my Cobra 75 WX ST CB radio (which I never use).

Kenwood VX-71 install in a 2nd gen Tacoma

Here are some details on my ham radio install in case anybody finds them useful. I'm a member of our local CERT group and also part of a local emergency communications group that works closely with the fire department. I went with the VX-71 because several members of the group have this radio...

    Plano box kitchen and inventory

I've modified another Plano box to store my general camping gear. The idea is that the kitchen box is the "clean" gear and this other box is the "dirty" gear. This time I used 1/4" baltic birch, 1/16" aluminum, and 1/8" aluminum rivets. My main goal was to ditch my lantern case and have a padded...

    Ace for overlanding

What do you plan to use the axe for? Cutting firewood? Clearing trail? If it's for firewood then personally I like the combination of a good folding saw such as a Silky Big Boy 2000 and a splitting hatchet. The saw makes fast work of bucking logs, with less lost wood than an axe. It's also...

    Packing / Consumable Inventory List?

I have a master packing list that I go through before every trip to make sure that I don't forget anything, or run low on any supplies. If I think of something I need during the trip I just take a note in my phone.

US West Tri-Valley OB Corral Hollow OHV Trail.

@PapaDave , I took this photo last time I ran Corral Hollow and think it might be the same place as the one you posted. Hopefully you have warmer weather. :)

    Vehicle Inventory

I've added a few items to my toolkit. 1) Small set of locking pliers that are handy on rounded off bolts or crimping shut brake or fuel lines. 2) Vessel 220W screwdriver. This has 6 different tips, two of which are JIS bits which work better on many Japanese screws than a phillips does. 3)...

    Plano box kitchen and inventory

A while ago I picked up a collapsible crate that I leave in the truck. It works great for holding dry food goods when camping, but I wanted a solid surface on top to keep the food from getting crushed and to provide a flat surface to put things on, so I made a quick lid out of 3/8" baltic birch...

2010 Tacoma "Are we truck people?" build

The 10+ year old Diehard in my 4Runner died so I replaced it with the Odyssey Extreme from the Tacoma and then bought a new Northstar 27F for the Tacoma. Then, on a recent trip to the Mendocino NF my 100A main breaker started tripping at ~50A load while running the ARB compressor (friend...
