I never thought about using rope for that. In my experience round pipe/tube tends not to be too noisy, but square (or anything else with a flat edge) sure can be.

If you can't find any good, local training options you can at least watch free Youtube tutorials. Watch several on the same topic and you will get the gist of the job. Then try it out yourself, with the videos on hand to refer back to as you go.

The 20 ton probably is overkill. Its one advantage is the larger footprint, hence better stability. That could be someone's justification.
Mine I picked up cheap at a swap meet and the dually seemed the most appropriate vehicle in which to place it. Way too big for the XJ.
