Open fires are pretty much banned anywhere in California. Get a fire permit before you go, free and informative. So areas were restricting wood fires but allowing propane fire pits. We had to do this a few times during the rough years (2015,16).
I agree, LED lights are way more safe and...
Winch shouldn't be a big deal. You should never run a winch without the vehicle running as it takes a big draw but the alternator should be able to handle it.
Be sure the winch contacts are really tight and test your winch each trip before heading out. I had an issue with a loose ground and it...
Glad to hear u had fun!
My kayak is an Innova Helios2 tandem kayak. Originally bought at REI but don't think they sell them anymore. Anything the is durable and not a toy will get you on the water. Just be careful and don't venture out too far. Winds can pick up and make paddling tough. But it...
In the Sierras last weekend. Had to pull an idiot in a Suburu out of a ditch. His tires were totally bald! We used 2 winches, one to keep the front end from hitting the tree and the rear to pull him out.
I use a dual starter-deep cycle large battery Interstate from Costco in my Range Rover. Has good reserve if I need it but rely on Goal Zero Yeti 400 for running the fridge when stationary. I also use 150+watts of foldable solar (Powerfilm and Flexopower) for recharging when stationary.
AGMs are a bit more robust than regular lead acid. I would also recommend one of the lithium jump packs (over 10k). They hold charge for a long time and work really well. Can save u if u drain the battery down. On rovers, u can hold the middle some light for 30 seconds and put the truck in...
The travel advisory is ridiculous. The good people of Baja are starving for tourists!
Baja safety hasn't been an issue for me either once passed the border towns. Mexicali is definitely easier than Tijuana for crossing. There is a big market in San Felipe as u come into town. There is also a...
I would advocate a selectable lock in the front as well, but as mentioned, you may not need it. A winch is much more valuable and much better at actually getting you out of a situation where you are stuck. With a rear locker already, money is better spent on winch, winch bumper, sliders, skid...
Don't waste your money on powdercoat for sliders unless you are a mall crawler. The first time you use your sliders, you will scrape all that beautiful powdercoat to the metal. They are sliders....meant to be hold the weight of your vehicle while sliding across rocks...what do you think is going...
Latch has worked for me, but my new Overland Pros tent has wider (2 inch) straps with double-d rings and velcro. They hold well and being bigger are easier to use. I haven't needed to change over but it is only 2 straps and not 6 like original post.
The original post is for the Anza 2000 tent per the title which is larger than a king size bed. The Anza 1400 is for 2 to 3 people closer to queen size bed.
My P38 Range Rover has been awesome even with all the typical P38 niggles. Never left me stranded and up until last month, never leaked oil on the ground. Fixed now. She has taken me to Baja twice, Moab 3x, Death Valley 5x, and numerous other places exploring all over the Sierras the past 9...
I was going to put in the new Cummins 2.8 Repower diesel in the Santana, but came across a low mileage 300TDI with a full drivetrain for a great price. Will save me 10 to 15k over the Cummins install. Building up my axles first and then converting the Santana to 4 link custom suspension and...
I also am a rover nutcase. Have a 2001 p38 Range Rover for the last 9 years, an 06 LR3 and imported a Santana/Defender from Barcelona earlier this year. A few pics.
Lol...so true. If wife isn't happy, she won't go. Another reason I got a roof top tent, so much more comfortable than sleeping on the ground! The 23Zero and OverlandPros are the only tents I know of that come standard with thicker 3 inch matttess vs 2.5 (half an inch makes a big...
InReach original for GPS signal and SOS backup.
Samsung 8.9 inch Tab A for mapping
GaiaGPS Pro for mapping software and imported gpx files. Has overlays of NPS maps.
Delorme (Garmin) Earthmate app as backup because route mapping is clunky and difficult.
Worked great for a week in the Maze...
I'm a big fan of the DeLorme (now Garmin) InReach devices synced to my android tablet. Tracks me and lets other follow. Used it last month far from cell service for text messaging and in a dire emergency, has search and rescue button.
I also use the Earthmate software but find it hard to...
