Took the family up to see the famous Coral Hollow loop today. I had never been on it but had read and watched enough You Tube stuff to have an idea of what I was getting into. (Or so I thought) We loaded into my 2003 Acura MDX and entered in on the easy south entrance. The drive was as expected...

Wife in pic. Hate having the "tent" up (aka roof) but 20 something degree mornings are to cold for this old bear.
I'll be curious to here how your trip goes on Slick Rock as I have read that it is pretty rough this year because of the winter. Be safe and have a great trip.
Personally from Sacramento, I would look at the Gold Lakes area off hwy 49. Beautiful and just of the path enough to not usually be over crowded.

May be a bit too broad of a question. Are you looking for ocean, wetlands, lakes, or Alpine lakes? Lots of choices to be sure.

I'm heading up to Arnold for the weekend. Unfortunately the wife and kids said no to the hot, loud, windy Jeep so I am taking the MDX. Going to explore best I can with what is really an all weather rig versus the rock crawler. Guess I won't be doing Slick or Deer this trip. But then again...
From your location your best bet is just head East on highway 4. It is the closest with the best reward possibilities. Coral, slick rock, and deer valley are all in the same general area. Cannot go wrong. Best of luck.

If you are looking for off the grid, back country stuff then yes. The closest official primitive camping is Gold Lake 4x4 campground.

My best suggestion for this area from personal experience, is the Gold Valley Trail. Longer at about 19 miles, it is easy to slightly moderate perhaps in a couple spots, the scenery is tough to beat and the trail will not wear your out. Great camping, hiking and other opportunity awaits...
Keep in mind that you can still get down to Snake Lake without taking the "insanely" steep route Snake Lake trail. If you go down the Deer Lake trail you can bypass the black diamond for something most any stock rig can do so long as you take it easy. I have gone both up and down "Snake Lake...
I'm really short wheel base and locked front and rear, but when I ran it last year there was only 1 spot that you had to deal with some big rocks in the middle of the trail that made it a little interesting. It is a beautiful trail though. Thanks for the Intel. Great looking Taco.

What was the condition of the trail? I know that originally the forest service said they weren't going to open it this year. Then they opened it and Deer Valley just recently.

I think the key word is friendly. It is doable in larger rigs but I would not recommend it if you like your body work. The trail is very long and very narrow (trees) through out a lot of the trail. If you want to go in with a full size, I would suggest you go in from the north side at Kaiser...
