Furthest south ive been is Mexico, and that was just to party. So I cant help with that.

My wife is from Peru, and her father had a Hilux for a long time, and there are massive open land to wheel and overland there. You can drive right up to many ancient wonders, no one and no infrastructure to stop you in the first place. She says you have to bring your own fuel, there's not a lot of fuel stations in the middle of nowhere.
We do plan to visit soon, and her cousin will let me borrow his overland Hilux and im very excited for that.
Im jealous that you are making such an epic trek. Good luck on your journey!

We're more than happy to share but you'd need to be a bit more specific with your questions. In a nutshell we spent an average of $96.64 per day over the 559 days we drove S.A ($54,022.94). That includes shipping from Panama to Colombia, shipping the rig back to the US from Uruguay, all of our flights, and a posh 2 week Galapagos cruise. We blogged about most of our trip but we abruptly stopped blogging when we entered Chile so the final 3 countries are incomplete. IIRC, on another thread you mentioned that your plan is for 6 months so our itinerary probably isn't helpful since we spent 3 times that. We drove south then north to Uruguay, we didn't yoyo the continent. With such a short timeline it would be better to ship in and out from different countries.
