Removed the plastic 2011 FJ gas tank skid and noticed it was grounded to the vehicles frame. Anybody know why? Replaced with an Al skid.

Plastic generates static electricity, should be grounded additional to mounting to the tank.
If fumes during re-fueling were to be ignited by a static discharge spark, Toyota might be able to be sued for NOT grounding it.
Just an educated guess...

As stated above , you would be surprised how much static electricity plastic generates with fluid pored across it. We had to attend a safety meeting about it, and they showed how bad it gets (Fire Dept.), they started a fire with static charge... That's why when you refill plastic gas cans you put it on the ground.....
