You have to look at it from the opposite direction: This is an upgrade from PVC.

Sadly, as one might fear regarding an unnaturally large rack, it's not real.
Here is today's progress:
The upper part is 10 year old PVC. Originally the entire thing was PVC, but it developed some failures this past year. I think the EMT will hold up better.
I need to pick up a handful of PVC fittings to finish it off.

Looks pretty good. I used to build these for folks going on Safaris in full size rigs. I too used the EMT as my base material. When all of the major vendors started offering racks that bolted together I quit manufacturing them because of the expected price point. I would have around 25-30 hrs in a completed rack and then all of the mounting hardware to support it on the roof of the specified vehicle. They were pricy back then but, they were made for people (multiple) to be walking on them with camera gear. I used the 1-1/4" tubing, 3/4" expanded metal for the floor, 12 ga 1-1/4 square tubing for the horizontals that were machined with a slot in the bottom to accept the mounting brackets. I used 3/16 bar to separate the bottom rail from the top and would add threaded rod to them to allow mounting of a Hi-lift jack. I would typically use the Con-Fer mounts for rigs with rain gutters.

i did a hydroponics project years back and ended up doing a lot of PVC welding. bought a welder from HF for under $60 and pvc rods are super cheap. notch the end of a pvc pipe with a 3/4" hole saw and fit it to the side of a pipe and weld it just like metal pipe. you get that nice fit and good looking bead and youre not limited to 90/45 degree angles...
