I started off with SPOT and then went to Garmin inReach. Both are excellent.

About 4 years ago I got a GMRS license and I have been exploring with the linking repeaters, which are usually free to join. A friend and I are currently working on repeater Coms where we can connect across the Rockies... a 400 mile stretch.

Used to use my inreach mini, for the last couple of trips I've been using the satellite mode of my iPhone

I use wi-fi calling on my cell connected to my Starlink.

On a recent 4 day backpack hunt with zero service I used the new iPhone feature of sending text messages via satellite with great success. It’s a feature that doesn’t constantly run but a valid backup for those with the iPhone and iOS capabilities to support it

Excellent function of iPhones to send satellite messages, unfortunately valid only for US and Canada.

I have the Garmin InReach Explorer + with a holder on the dashboard to keep it close to the windscreen for better signal.

If I was to purchase it again, I would rather chose the InReach mini.
